Wayne Douglas Barclay, age 82, of Wilton, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A visitation will be held from 2:00 -4:00 p.m., Saturday, March 28, 2026 at Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation. Private family burial will take place in Overman Cemetery in Atalissa at a later date.
Wayne was born on August 10, 1943, the son of Virgil and Margaret (Slach) Barclay in Muscatine. He graduated from Monticello High School. Wayne married Beverly Maurer on October 24, 1986 in Atalissa. Beverly passed away on November 13, 1998.
In his younger years, Wayne was a dairy farmer near Rochester, where he developed a strong work ethic and an appreciation for the land that stayed with him throughout his life. He later became a familiar face in the community as the owner and operator of Barclay Bait and Tackle, first in Tipton and later in Wilton. Wayne also worked at the Wilton Steel Mill until his retirement, contributing years of steady and dependable service.
Wayne found his greatest joy being outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting, and trapping, and took great pride in his vegetable garden—especially his tomatoes. He also enjoyed canning the fruits of his labor, preserving not only food but a way of life. In his spare time, Wayne could often be found attending auctions or searching for unique antiques to add to his collection. A man of many interests, Wayne was rarely still. He was always busy with one project or another, embracing each day with purpose. His hardworking spirit and love for simple pleasures will be remembered by all who knew him.
Wayne will be dearly missed by three sons, Brian (Arlene) Barclay, Cory Barclay and Randy Barclay; ten grandchildren, Brianna (Emily) DeGraff, Morgan, Cody, Austin, Braden, Noah, Kyleigh, Alycia, Eban and Ian Barclay; and a sister-in-law, Sandy Barclay.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Margaret; and two brothers, Jim and Tom Barclay.
