Zella Marie York Yarbrough, 89, a resident of Lexington, formerly of Bryson City, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2022 in Hinkle Hospice Home. Zella was born in Swain County on May 3, 1933 to the late James Monroe and Sarah Lindsay York. She was the youngest of 15 children and was well taken care of by her older siblings. She loved her sisters and brothers very much. She retired from PPG Industries after many years of service. Zella, always independent, was up on all the latest fashion trends, and to say she loved clothes was an understatement. She was always dressed to perfection. Zella was loved by her family immensely and attended Christian Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Foy Yarbrough; a son, Kelly York; a daughter, Cynthia Kay Yarbrough; and several of her siblings.
A graveside service will be held Monday, September 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM in Lexington City Cemetery. Zella will lie in state at Davidson Funeral Home Monday morning from 12-1 PM. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to Hinkle Hospice Home, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
Zella is survived by her son, Ronnie Yarbrough (Kelly Greene Yarbrough) of Linwood; a daughter, Linda Flynn of Lexington; a sister, Rachel Smith of Bryson City; seven grandchildren; Lisa, Amy, Lori, Tina, Valli, Paul, and Sarah; several great-grandchildren, Owen, Kindrey, Noah, Kiley, Izzy, Allie, Kelsey, John, Luke, Karah, Ella, Kadance, Emmie, Caley, Savannah, and Lyndyn.

Zell is my mom's younger sister. As a child, I spent many nights in her and Foy's home on Mendotta Avenue while visiting mom's mother, twin brother Willis and of course, Ronnie and Kelvin. She was such a great homemaker and aunt.

I will miss aunt Zell so, she was such a wonderful lady. I will miss her laughter and her stories of their childhood. Aunt Zell was a very intelligent lady and I will miss our long conversations. I feel blessed having her for my aunt.
