John with nice buck he harvested near his house in 2002.

John had planted food plots on their property and harvested two deer during the Fall, 2007 hunting, I understand this deer was the largest one.

Thanks Al for tracking me down and passing the news. John was one of my closest friends in Lakeview High. As Allen described, the Schoolcraft home above the store was our key hangout in those years. Few parents would have been as gracious as Roy and Wilma, with their home, food, and television (which a number of the guys represented lacked at their own homes). Sports, and particularly boxing, were a big draw. John and I, and others spent many days hunting, hiking, and camping. On one memorable return from a deer hunt we hit black ice and got a quick 360 view of our whereabouts. Another time we chose a pasture for camping overnight. I forgot something and went home to recover it. I returned to find John and the other fellow treed by a bull. Rabbits, squirrels, pheasants, ducks, grouse, woodcock, and snipe were our goal many times. We tried some muskrat trapping and loved hiking on the (off-limits) Fort Custer military reservation after the war or playing in junk bombers at the airport. Those times in the outdoors developed my interest in wildlife conservation that I pursued as a career. My contact with John after college was infrequent as we both grew in our professions and families. He is missed. May the Lord bless his family and friends in this difficult time.

I remember my Dad the way I saw him when I was young. He worked hard on his job at the mining company. But, what he really loved was being with his family, taking us camping, hunting and fishing. He coached us kids in baseball and football and Boy Scouts. He was larger than life. Even though his actions in later years weren't always those of the superhero dad we knew as little kids, I think my brothers and I will choose to remember him as he was in those days. Even in the more recent times, Dad showed he could be a caring, loving man. He will be missed and we will keep him in our hearts forever.

I'm sad to hear of John's passing, we were classmates from grade school, at Praireview on through high school. I remember John as being very smart and a very nice person. I worked at Roy's Market for one summer, his parents were the very best, a fine family. I'm sure John is safely home.

John and his sons, Brett, Chris, Steve, Kevin...and dog.

I remember when John was in high school and the Schoolcraft family lived over Roy's Market on Territorial Road, just a block or two from the high school. The Schoolcraft dining room daily became a minor cafeteria, with John's friends like (I may not get spellings right) Jim Lewis, Ralph Callidine, the LaMore brothers, Don Bain, Robert Preston (I think thats right), and many more, who often bought stuff to eat from the store and came up to shot the bull. Many of my friends often stopped by, too, like Diale Taliaferro, Dick Butts, Dick Madison, sometimes Bill Jaress..I'm sure I am forgetting someone. Girls were generally excluded, not because we didn't want them, but who in their right mind would want to eat lunch with a bunch of guys telling stories? (Wilma, our mother, may have come up from working at the store to quiet us down now and then!) It was great fun but one had to be prepared to fend off some verbal jabs and challenges.
I also remember when John was driving the family car on Capital Avenue with Janet Baker as his passenger, whom he later married, and they experienced a serious automobile accident. Some guy coming from the opposite direction near the Country Club crossed the centerline and hit them head-on. They could have been killed. They were both battered and bloodied, but experienced no debilatating injuries. They were very lucky. I also remember spending lazy days swimming around Goguac Lake, mostly on inner tubes, borrowing some floating swimming docks now and then to rest. We also used to rent a boat a O'Dell's boat rental on Goguac Lake and fish all night for bass, taking an early morning snooze on the picnic tables at Willard Beach. The tables were very hard, but those were the days!!!!! From a sad and loving brother. I wish we would have kept in better touch with each other and our families over the years! From his little brother Allen.
