Margaret S. Bassage Marshall Margaret S. Bassage, died Thursday, January 31, 2013 at her home in the loving care of her daughter. Mrs. Bassage was born July 17, 1919 in Corning, New York to Margaret G. (Kleinhans) and John N. Schneider. She was a graduate of Corning Free Academy, Crystal City Business School and also attended Syracuse University. She was married January 5, 1946 at St. Mary Church, Corning, NY to J. Allen Bassage. When her children were young, she was active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts serving as Steuben County, NY coordinator for the Girl Scout Marian Award. She lived in Corning, NY until her husband was transferred to Marshall Michigan in 1964 and has lived there since. She was an active member of St. Mary Church in Marshall, where she enjoyed her duties as sacristan, usher-greeter, lector at daily liturgies and Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the Rosary Altar Service Organization and former St. Bernadette Guild. As a forty year member of Oaklawn Hospital Auxiliary, she volunteered at Red Cross Blood mobiles, stuffed Toy Guild and Tray Favor Guild. She was a former member of the Fountain City Senior Citizens where she was honored as Senior of the Year in 1994. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Albion Post #3672, the Marshall Historical Society and has served as receptionist at the Honolulu House. She also volunteered for Mobile Meals, MACS and at Tendercare Nursing Home. Most recently, she served on the Marshall Advisory Committee for Burnham Brook Center of which she was also a member. She enjoyed all kinds of hand work and was a talented seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband, former Marshall Mayor, J. Allen Bassage on January 1, 1993, a son, Stephen, a daughter, Anne and a brother, Victor Schneider. She is survived by daughters, Arlene Stone of Au Train, MI and Kathryn Bassage of Marshall; a son, Ronald Bassage of University Place, Washington; two grandsons and two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Monday from 2PM-4PM and 6PM-8PM. A Rosary Service will be held at 6 PM Monday at the funeral home. A funeral Mass to celebrate her Lord and the gift of her life will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Marshall with Reverend Fr. Stephen Naas and Rev. Fr. James Barrett concelebrating. A visitation will be held in Corning, New York on Thursday, February 7 with burial following in St. Mary Cemetery in Corning. In 2000 Rev. James Barrett nominated Marge for the Michigan Week Spiritual Minuteman Award (which she did receive). A quote from the nomination summed Mrs. Bassage's life up very well. "If she has any faults," Father Barrett said, " One of the top ones would be that she is too thoughtful in a world that has forgotten this art all too often." Well said, Father Jim. The family would prefer that you remember Marge with a memorial contribution to St. Mary Catholic Church, Oaklawn Hospital or Starr Commonwealth. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home. To sign the on line guest register and leave a message for the family please visit
