Velma Wiseman

Velma Ferne Wiseman, 88

Long-time Mountain Home resident Velma Ferne Wiseman died Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Baxter Regional Medical Center. She was 88.

Born in Artesia, New Mexico, in 1924, Ferne grew up in New Mexico and in Cassville, Missouri. She married Billy (Bill) Roberts Wiseman in June, 1942; their first child Michael was born in 1944. After Bill returned from WWII Army service in 1945, the Wisemans, now with a second child Joyce, operated clothing stores in Wheaton, Missouri and Berryville and Harrison, Arkansas. They moved to Mountain Home in 1953 to operate Wiseman's Dry Goods Store, located on the southeast corner of the square. Eventually the couple opened a separate fabric store on South Baker Street and a satellite store in Gainesville that was managed by Ferne.

Two more children, Tim and Jennifer, were born in the 1960s. After selling the last of their stores in 1973, Bill Wiseman continued on the Boards of the People's Bank and First State Building and Loan. The Wisemans began children and cattle-raising at their Quality Ridge farm. Ferne continued to live on the farm after Bill's death in 1990.

Committed Christians, the Wisemans joined the First Christian Church of Mountain Home upon arrival, and Ferne continued as a member for her remaining 59 years. She was active in all phases of church life, most notably Christian education, the Christian Women's Fellowship, and especially the conduct of the church's summer Bible School. She taught and played piano (by ear) for the Sunday School classes of multiple generations of Mountain Home families; she "retired" from teaching several times. In recent years Ferne paid regular visits to local nursing homes to play hymns and old favorites for the residents.

Ferne Wiseman will be remembered for her good humor, her great faith, and her dedication to husband and family. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Her children include Michael Wiseman of Arlington, Virginia; Joyce Wiseman of Mountain Home; Tim Wiseman of Greenville, North Carolina, and Jennifer Wiseman of Reisterstown, Maryland.

Visitation for Mrs. Wiseman will be Noon - 9 PM Thursday at Roller Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), PO Box 376, Mountain Home, AR 72654. Visit www.rollerfuneralhomes.com for an online guestbook.
