Edith Matzenger Balfe passed away early Sunday morning, August 12, 2012 after 85 years of what she described as a full, rich and rewarding life.

Born in Mobile, Alabama on April 3, 1927, where her family had lived since the 1840s, Edie moved to the NASA/Clear Lake area in 1965, in the middle of the exciting race for the moon decade.

Edie was a proud member of Thetas at Murphy HS in Mobile, then attended Mary Washington College in VA until becoming engaged to her US Naval Academy midshipman, John McKinstry 'Mac' Balfe. Married in July of 1947, her love of travel stood her in good stead as she explored America from coast to coast with her Naval aviator husband. Raising three daughters in an ever-changing environment brought many challenges and showcased Edie's amazing capacity for flexibility, adaptability and humor. With love and concern she saw their 3 daughters thru college and cared for her beloved husband of 47 years throughout his 34-year battle with Lupus.

An enthusiastic member of the Military Officers' Wives Club, she appeared in many of their spring fashion shows. For years she enjoyed both the College of the Mainland theater series and the Houston Symphony performances. Edie was an active participant in the Timber Cove Civic Club for many years.

Preceded in death by her dear husband, Mac, Edie enjoyed the loving companionship of second husband Bill Stellenwerf for the last 9 years of his life. Edie is survived by her daughters: Ann (Mrs. Tom) Caywood, Susan Balfe Bush, and Carol (Mrs. Eric) Heidhausen, and four grandchildren: Jennifer and Carolyn Bush, and Laura (Mrs. Kevin) Doran and Eric Heidhausen. Relatives still living in Mobile include Edie's sister-in-law, Jeanne (Mrs. Chester) Matzenger, Joe (& Rita) Matzenger, Betty (Mrs. Patrick) Waldrop and their respective children. Stellenwerf relatives who have meant so much to Edie include Cornelia 'Neil' Cliburn, Steven Stellenwerf & James Campbell, Bill (& Elena) Stellenwerf Jr. and Erna Stellenwerf (Mrs. Denny) Hedlund. In spite of recent health challenges, Edie retained her dignity and her sense of humor. She will be terribly missed by all who knew her.

All services were held on Friday, August 17, 2012 at Forest Park East Funeral Home in Webster, Tx.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to LIGHTHEART Memory Care Facility, PO Box 58663, Houston, TX 77258. The compassionate care offered to Edie by the Lightheart staff during the last year was greatly appreciated by her entire family.
