Mary Jo Lanier (formerly of Vinton, LA) passed away at her home in League City, TX after a 6+ year battle with cancer. She was born in Orange, TX on Aug. 13, 1953 to Hershel and Oneta (Hicks) Sandifer. Mary resided in League City for the past 16+ years, where she enjoyed a successful career in real estate with Remax. Mary was blessed with an amazing gift as a "people person" who never met a stranger, which made her a natural in the sales field. She always enjoyed helping others and making them feel special and important. She was a great asset to her husband Paul and his coaching career, supporting his goals and his teams' endeavors in any way she could. She has always been so proud of her son, Hunter, and was surely his biggest fan. She gave back to the cancer community by encouraging and uplifting all she met through the years while receiving care at MD Anderson. She rarely complained and focused instead on others in need. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Houston, and also received support from Lakewood Church in Houston during her illness. Mary felt tremendous joy when visiting her family's home place in Louisiana, where she had created wonderful memories with family and dear old friends through the years. One of her hobbies and greatest passions was her beautiful yard and all the roses she and her husband tended with such care.

Those who will most cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 19 1/2 years, Paul I. Lanier and her one living son, Hunter Blake Lanier, who have cared for Mary with such devotion throughout her illness. Survivors include 3 sisters: Jeanne Sandifer of Vinton, LA, Cindy Dowers and husband Glynn of Sulphur, LA, Shannon Wald and husband Steve of Parker, CO; also 3 brothers, Sandy Sandifer of Carlyss, LA, Greg L. Sandifer of Vinton, LA and Paul D. Sandifer of LaPorte, CO. Survivors include 10 nieces and nephews: Todd, Joel, Stephanie, Michael, Marla, Christina, Christopher, David, Katelyn, and Sawyer. Sawyer has been the apple of Mary's eye for the past 5 years, and her devotion to him was more that of a grandparent; her tremendous loss will be felt greatly throughout his life. Mary also has several great-nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by both her parents and her son Stephen Blake McNeil.

Her funeral will be at Hixson Funeral Home in Vinton, LA on Saturday, December 15 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery in Carlyss, LA following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's name to MD Anderson Cancer by visiting or gifts in form of check may be mailed to MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486.

Pallbearers are Glynn Dowers, Steve Wald, Todd Dowers, Michael Sandifer, Christopher Turner, David Bahnsen, Jay Campbell and Jason Campbell. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at
