Phares Thomas "Tom" Swartley, secure in his faith, went peacefully to his heavenly home Tuesday, July 14, 2015, in League City, Texas at the age of 78, just 4 days short of his 56th wedding anniversary. He was surrounded by his wife and children.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida on February 22, 1937, Tom grew up in the small town of Green Cove Springs south of Jacksonville, where he lived with his widowed school teacher mother, Norma Estelle Swartley and his sister Lucy.

Tom attended the University of Florida for 2 years before joining the Air Force in 1959. He earned his Bachelor's degree in mathematics at Rollins College in 1972. After a short stint of service in the Air Force, he and his wife Pat moved to Florida where he got a job with IBM for 27 years in the space industry beginning at the Kennedy Space Center. He went on to work as a software engineer for other space contractors including Loral, Boeing, Martin Marietta, and Lockheed Martin during his 45 year career which ended when he retired from United Space Alliance in 2011. He was honored to be one of the first hired for the Space Shuttle program and one of the last to leave.

Born and raised in the Baptist church, Tom came to know the Lord in his early teens and remained steadfast in his faith all his life. He was a devoted husband and father to his wife and 4 children who remember him as a patient, kind and loving man. He enjoyed a lifetime of being well-liked and highly regarded by all who knew him. Gardening was his passion, and his family enjoyed the fruits of his labor for many years, especially his tomatoes.

Tom is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat", his son Robert Thomas Swartley, and daughters Karen Lynne Frerking, Julie Anne Shireman and Jennifer Dian Swartley; grandchildren, Ryan Christopher and Blake Andrew Frerking; Emily Cherie and Clara Brooke Shireman; Vincent Thomas and Elena Diane Waldo and Robert Thomas Swartley, Jr. He is also survived by his sister Lucy Swartley Burchell, nephew Thomas Edward Burchell and niece Carrie Ann Terpstra.
