Rita Flanzik Powell, age 91, died on Saturday, April 29, 2017 in Clear Lake, TX. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 26, 1925 to the late Dorothy Rabinowitz Flanzik and Jacob Flanzik. She graduated from Hunter College High School and received her B.A. in Home Economics in 1946 from Hunter College in New York City. Mrs. Powell taught high school home economics in Albuquerque, NM and Ann Arbor, MI in the late 1940s. She taught 5th and 6th grades in Bowie, MD public schools for 19 years, from 1966 to 1985. Mrs. Powell lived in Bowie, MD for 34 years before moving to Taylor Lake Village, TX, in 1999. Mrs. Powell was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Carl Powell. She is survived by her three children, Jonathan Powell (of Taylor Lake Village, TX), Barbara Powell Silcox (of North Potomac, MD), and Elizabeth Powell Porter (of Wilmington, NC) and five grand children, Rachel Hudson (of Northglenn, CO), Nathan Porter (of Wilmington, NC), Jacob Evans Powell (of Austin, TX), and Charles Evans Powell (of Washington, DC). Mrs. Powell will be buried in Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, MD. A Tribute to Rita for local family and friends will be scheduled at a later time. In lieu of flowers, consider honoring Rita with a donation to Galveston Baykeeper.
