Stephen Seguino Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 22, 2012.
BANGOR - Stephen "Steve" Anthony Seguino, born Sebastiano Antonio Seguino, 83, passed away peacefully Aug. 21, 2012, after a long illness, with his family at his side. Steve was born May 30, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was the youngest and last surviving son of immigrant parents, Antonio Seguino and Gaetana Fabozzi, who came to the U.S. from Naples, Italy, in 1906.

Steve met his wife while serving in the U.S. Air Force in 1949 and remained in Bangor for much of the rest of his life. Early on, he was employed at Viner Shoe Co., later as a salesman, and as policeman for the Bangor Police Department. His true calling was revealed when he, his wife, Sandy, and daughter, Debbie founded Napoli Pizza in Bangor in 1969. After opening several branches and retiring from this business, he later opened Seguino's Restaurant in Bangor with his family. Steve was Italian through and through, and shared the pleasures of that cultural heritage with his many friends and large extended family. Upon retiring from the restaurant business in 1992, he dedicated much of his time to hosting family and friends in his home for renowned and unforgettable Italian dinners. He knew that friends and family were at the core of life's meaning. Steve was gregarious and outgoing, known for his colorful personality and generosity. A man born to humble immigrant beginnings, he led a fulfilling life with much business success and profoundly gratifying relationships with friends and family. He knew joy in his life, and he shared that joy with others.

He was predeceased by brothers and sisters-in-law, Nick and Betty Seguino, Tony and Anna Seguino, and Joseph Seguino; sisters and brothers-in-law, Caroline and Toto Spadarella, from whom he learned the pizza business, Clara and Rocco Barretta, Mary and Tommy Viverito; and nephews and nieces, Frank Spadarella, Ronald Barretta, Grace Celkupa, Marion Kross, and Jackie Seguino. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Aileen "Sandy" (Burgess) Seguino; daughters, Deborah and husband, Kerry Cox, Stephanie Seguino; grandsons, Dante Seguino, Shawn and wife, Kristin Cox, Ryan and wife, Andrea Cox; numerous nephews and nieces, including Ida Spadarella of California, Nick Seguino of Pennsylvania, Gaetana and Jerry Friedman of North Carolina, Joe and Pat Seguino of Illinois, Tony and Dan Seguino of Florida, Richard and Joanne Seguino of Long Island, Michael Barretta of North Carolina, Vinnie and Betty Viverito, Robert and Sherry Viverito; cousins, Rosalie and Lucy Nazzarro, all of Long Island, N.Y., Kitty Maritato of Florida; and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews; as well as a large extended family in Frignano Maggiore, Italy including his dear cousins, Titina and Antonio Mottola, and Guido and Pasquale Seguino. He had maintained close and continued contact with his Neapolitan relatives over the years. Steve is also survived by his dear sisters and brothers-in-law, Gene Greene, Lucy Cowallis, Joan and Sib Orcutt, all of Maine, and Shirley Hurry of Florida; as well as many wonderful Maine nieces and nephews. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the caring doctors and nurses at the Cancer Clinic, especially Coleen and also to the people at St. Joseph's Home and Hospice Care. The family wants to give special thanks to all the long-time friends and family who visited in Steve's last months, reminiscing on old times and reminding Steve of his rewarding and fulfilling life. Steve also wanted to express his gratitude and love of his dear friend, Roy Corbin, and his cherished neighbors, David and Mary Prescott and Dennis and DJ Bowden, and his cigar buddies, Brian and Frank.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary's Catholic Church, 768 Ohio St., Bangor. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Reception Hall of St. Mary's Catholic Church, after the interment. Those who wish to remember Steve in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401 or CancerCare of Maine, Lafayette Family Cancer Center, care of Healthcare Charities, P. Such a special and one of a kind individual!! I have so many memories of Steve from when I was growing up. Steve's pool was always a favorite place to be in the summer. We were all one big family. I can still hear his voice or laugh in my head and remember well all the advice he would give on life. My love and prayers to my extended family, The Seguinos... and Steve, may you rest in peace.

I must tell you all this kind deed Steve did for me back in 1971. We lived next door I was in 3rd grade. We were poor and didn't have much. I was given a used bike by a family member. I loved the bike and rode it all over our neiaborhood. One day the back wheel got bent some how while riding it.I had to drag the bike home because the back wheel wouldn't turn. I was crying not because the bike was broken but because I knew we didn't have the money to fix the bike. Right before I got to our driveway, Steve pulled into his driveway, got out and asked why I was crying. I explained to him about the broken bike. He said why don't we put the bike in the car and take it to the shop and get it fixed. We did and the repair man fixed it while we waited. While waiting Steve noticed the seat had rip in it and had a new seat put on as will!! I can not tell you how much I was thankful for his never forgotten good deed.I tell this story with tears in my eyes. Thank you Steve for your kindness!

Who could ever forget Steve? Remembering way back when he had the busy Napolio's on Hammond Street. And, if I remember correctly, he is the proud 'dad' of the great sandwich- The God-Father. Right today it is still a big mover at the Papa Gambino's restaurant/sandwich shop. Best to Steve's family.
