ST. LOUIS - Luther Ingram, the R&B soul singer and songwriter best known for his hit, "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want to Be Right)," has died. He was 69.

Ingram died Monday at a Belleville hospital after suffering for years from diabetes, kidney disease and partial blindness, his wife, Jacqui Ingram, said Tuesday. He had lived in O'Fallon for 10 years.

Born Nov. 30, 1937, in Jackson, Tenn., Ingram wrote and sang music his whole life, starting as a boy in a sibling group, the Midwest Crusaders, after his family moved in 1947 to Alton.

He roomed with Jimi Hendrix when each was recording in New York, performed with Ike Turner at clubs in East St. Louis, and was the opening act for Isaac Hayes. He recorded through the 1980s and performed in concert until the mid-1990s when his health began declining.

"His instrument was his voice; his heart and head were his inspiration," said friend Bernie Hayes, a St. Louis journalist, disc jockey and author of "The Death of Black Radio."

"He was a big name until (singer) Luther Vandross came onto the scene," when younger audiences started to confuse them, he said.

Ingram recorded with Decca Records in New York and in 1965 wrote and sang "I Spy for the FBI" with his brothers in their group, Luther Ingram and the G-Men, for Smash Records, part of the Mercury label. He eventually had a five-year association with Memphis-based Stax Records during the height of its commercial success.

In 1971, Ingram and songwriter-performer Sir Mack Rice ("Mustang Sally") co-wrote "Respect Yourself" for the Staple Singers, the biggest hit Stax ever had.

The song evolved from Ingram's concern that young black men needed to respect themselves more. Rice said he thought it would be a great idea for a song, said Tim Sampson, spokesman at Soulsville USA, the nonprofit group that built the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis.

Ingram recorded "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want to Be Right)," in 1972 on Koko Records, which Stax distributed. The song placed No. 1 on Billboard magazine's R&B chart in 1972.

He stayed with the Stax family until Stax was forced into bankruptcy in 1975.

"Luther was constantly in the studio, working with writers and arrangers," said Deanie Parker, who spent her career at Stax and Soulsville.

"He was a soft-spoken, quiet, person that I think relished peace. He was a very intense singer; he took it very seriously. When he was rehearsing, he'd go over it and over it and seek perfection."

His other popular songs include "Ain't That Loving You (For More Reasons Than One)," "I'll Be Your Shelter" and "You Never Miss Your Water."

Ingram was one of the performers in "Wattstax," a 1972 documentary based on a concert by Stax artists to raise funds for rebuilding the Watts area of Los Angeles after the 1965 race riot.

In addition to his wife of 46 years, Jacqui, Ingram is survived by sons Eric Luther and Kenneth Knight and two grandsons.

I've always known about Luther Ingram's music from my brother as a child, but recent years as I grew into a man and really started to appreciate good southern soul music, I have collected all of his albums. His voice was one of a kind. I'm not taking anything from Mr. Vandross, but this was the real voice of Love, happiness, and pain! God bless his entire family!!

For Luther...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

To the Family ~ Those we love left us with gifts in the form of memories that no one can take away. They gave us wisdom that we can still recall, companionship when we were alone, comfort when we needed it, and memories of their laughter and smile. These are gifts of love that are ours to keep. Though I do not know the family, I would like to extend my condolences. May the tender mercy that God has always shown be with your family now so that you will know that you are not alone. And may the prayers of others help in some small way to bring you strength, comfort and courage each day. Many words will be expressed, yet we know God can express and provide to you and your family everything that is needed to care and sustain your hearts. - Isaiah 41:10 & 13.

Jacqueline, Eric, Kenny and the Ingram Family,
I offer you my deepest sympathies. Sister Daze was kind enough to notify me through e-mail of Luther's funeral arrangements in March. Like I told her, I will forever treasure the brief moment in time we shared when I rehearsed with Luther and backed him on guitar in concert at the Minneapolis Auditorium in 1970, while his touring and opening for Isaac Hayes. What great memories I have of him, that magical night, his wonderful voice, and his will to rehearse over and over until it's just right! For it's not "magic" until it is perfect. Luther's music was and always will be pure magic!
Musically yours,

I had the privledge to travel with Luther, (brothers) Jesse and Thomas in the 70's and a close friend for 40 years. Luther will be missed, but he left me with a quote from the song he wrote for the Staples Singers. (Respect Yourself). Once you learn to respect yourself you will always respect the other person. After Luther had the no. #1 hit in the nation july 1971 he remained the same person he was before he was famous. May God bless Jackie, Eric,Kenny and his mother Callie. He will remain in our hearts for ever.

Dear Jacqui,Kenny,and Eric.
I am so sorry to hear of Luther's passing. As the calls started to come in from my family I really began to look back at how very important of a figure he truely was.
As someone who was definately at awe so to speak whenever I was around him,I reflected on how lucky I was to go to school from grade school thru high school with Eric that offered myself many opportunities to spend time with him, and each and every time he made me feel so special!! With all his accomplishments he had the God given ability to make others feel special. I'm sure he's Headlining a concert in Heaven! The angels will love him as many on earth always will.. May God bless you all.

To The family Of the Late Luther Ingram

For many years we have been fans of Luther Ingram. We hope the following poem will be a comfort to you.

It’s God’s Will And We Must Comply
By: Charles G. Turner, Sr.

Life is uncertain,
But as sure as we are born one day we must die
Sometimes we sit and wonder why
The fact is it’s God’s will and we must comply.

Throughout our lives we live through happiness and sadness
And many toils and strife
And when our earthly life is over we enter into our “eternal life”

Whenever a loved one or friend makes their earthly depart
It is natural for it to bring hurt and sorrow to our heart
And to deal with our loss we grieve, mourn, and cry
In all essence we must remember this is God’s will and we all must comply

For those of us that are left behind
We must cherish the special memories
And keep them all in mind
Just remember it is not for us to question why we have to die
It’s God’s will and we all have to comply

May God Bless and comfort all of you
Mr. & Mrs. Charles G. Turner, Sr. & Family
March 25, 2007
May God give you the Grace that you need to sustain you in your time of lost. He never makes a mistake and know that now Luther is singing with the Angles up in Glory. May you find comfort in these words. May God continue to Bless You and your Family and keep you.

When I think of a memorable time in my life, I remember the day I met Luther Ingram in person when he was visiting his family "the Lockett's" on McCasland Avenue in East St. Louis where I lived I was a young teenaged girl.
It was a blessing to have had the opportunity to meet Luther. Hearing his music would always take me back home and back to that day. That's what is so special about those "Precious Memories," even when our loved ones are nolonger whith us, they will always live in our hearts and minds.
Rest on Luther and may God almighty give your family and loved ones the strengh to endure.

To the family of Luther T. Ingram,

I will never forget the good times that we all shared together with
Luther at moms over in Alton. I will remember Luther as a dear friend
and closer than a brother to me. Over the years, he has been a teacher and mentor to me. Because of the gift of song within his heart, he helped keep me out of many troubled waters. He helped me refine and perfect the music gift within me. This is something he loved to do and was a master at it. I have worked with Luther as a professional since I was thirteen years old. I have never met a person who was so concerned about other people as Luther was. He never thought that he was to good to stop what he was doing and help someone else. Sometimes, he would stop at peoples homes and give a mini concort, just because he loved people. I dont know of any professional artist that would give his talant away free, but Luther would. I could fill this guest book alone with what I know about the other hardest working man in show business but time and space wont permit. I wish the best for all of his family, and I will miss him dearly. Every time that I pick up my guitar and strike a note, I will remember the voice of Luther Ingram singing one of the many songs that still echo in my soul today and will forever. I will truly miss him. Many of you may have known Luther Ingram the artist, but I wish you could have known Luther Ingram the man who truly did always give respect to the other man. May his soul rest in the Lord forever because those of us who knew Luther, also knew that he loved
singing the gospel and that is where his gift came from. May the Lord
receive him.
