John Belz Sr.

John Thomas "Jack" Belz Sr., 90, born October 24, 1927, in East St. Louis, IL. died on July 8, 2018, in Brandon, FL, where he had been a resident for 2 years. He was a resident of Belleville for over 70 years.

Jack was a 1945 graduate of Central Catholic High School in East St. Louis. He was privileged to have continued close friendships with many of his high school classmates throughout his life. Many were also proud members of the Our Pals Baseball team. He owned and operated the Century Cigar Store in East St Louis. Jack and his wife raised their family in Belleville. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Serra Club. He served in the U.S. Army. Jack was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan. He was a devoted family man and loyal friend to all.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara "Bobbie," nee Jarosik, Belz who died on December 23, 2007. They were blessed to be married for 56 years, and they were fortunate to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by friends and family. Also proceeded in death by his parents, William and Anne Belz; his sister Dorothy Ann "Belz" Effinger; brothers and sister-in-laws, William and Juanita Belz, Victor and Mary Belz, Edward and Norma Belz, Robert Belz and James Belz; and brother-in-laws, Vincent Jarosik and Edward Connor.

Surviving are his children, Rebecca (William) Sobczak of Brandon, Florida, John Belz Jr. of Belleville, Daniel (Mary) of Benton, AR, and Barbara (Scott) Gilleland of Bull Valley IL; 11 grandchildren, Brent (Lindsey), John and Tim (Michelle) Sobczak, Kiffon Keigher, and Carolyn, Kimberly, and Jenny Belz, Christy (Brant) Law, and Robert, Jack (Alyssa) and Abby Gilleland; five great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Richard Effinger; sister-in-laws, Fritzi Belz, Mary Lou Belz, Elaine Jarosik and Francis (Jarosik) Connor and John and Mary (Jarosik) Adams; and many very special nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made the St. Clair County Serra Club or Catholic Charities of Belleville.

Visitation: Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2018, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Belleville.

Funeral: Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2018, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Belleville.
