Roy Skaer

Roy Walter Skaer, 89, of Smithton, IL, born September 14, 1928, in Prairie du Long Township, IL, died Tuesday, July 10, 2018, in Smithton, IL.

Roy was a retired farmer and a long time official for Prairie du Long Township. He was a member of the St. Clair County Farm Bureau and St. John's United Church of Christ, Smithton, IL, where he had served on the church council. He was a former Smithton School Board member and Smithton Volunteer Fire Department Trustee. Roy was an Army veteran having served in Germany during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis J. and Elizabeth A., nee Froese, Skaer; a brother, Curt Skaer; a sister, Doris (Grover) Carr; a sister-in-law, Agnes (Walter) Frierdich; two brothers-in-law, Dan Schneider and Ralph Henss; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Frank and Cecilia Schneider.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Ann, nee Schneider, Skaer, whom he married on September 9, 1951, in Piggot, AK; a daughter, Diane Lupa (John Rekart); two sons, Dean (Jane) Skaer and Gary (Fay) Skaer; six grandchildren, Allan (Stephanie) Skaer, Andrew (Jackie) Skaer, Elizabeth (Travis) Shaw, John Skaer, Steven (Laurel) Lupa, and Brian Lupa; five great-grandchildren; Lillian, Dean, Mollie, Margaret, Gwyneth, and another grandchild due this fall; two sisters-in-law, Ethel Skaer, and Elaine (Don) Ortman; and four brothers-in-law, Frank (Janice) Schneider, Ralph (Antoinette) Schneider, Robert (Janet) Schneider, and Kenneth (Becky) Schneider.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2018, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, IL., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2018, at St. John United Church of Christ, Smithton, IL.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2018, at St. John United Church of Christ, Smithton, IL, with Rev. Dwayne Dollgener officiating.

Burial with military honors will be at Smithton City Cemetery, Smithton, IL.
