Robert J. Attaway, age 75, died peacefully in Bellingham from complications of colon cancer. Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, he entered the Peace Corps after college and was assigned to Nigeria. He was evacuated during the Biafran War and reassigned to Ethiopia where he completed his tour. Returning home, he studied courses in Missouri and Texas, and was the author of a published novel based on his Nigerian experiences. At the age of 35, he became a contract negotiator for the Defense Department. His civil service time included assignments in Detroit, California, Maryland, and ended with 22 years overseas in Germany and Italy. He moved to Bellingham in 2005 on his retirement, and in recent years spent some time as a volunteer docent at the Whatcom Museum. He is survived by the love of his life for over 44 years, his wife Denise Gonzalez. Also surviving are three sisters, all living in the Kansas City area. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Whatcom Hospice House.
