Thomas LaPlante Obituary

Tom LaPlante, a long time Bellingham resident, passed away unexpectedly at his home over the 4th of July weekend. Tom was born in Bellevue, Washington on May 31, 1963. After graduating from Newport High School in Bellevue, he attended Western Washington University where he obtained a degree in Geology. Following graduation, Tom made Bellingham his home and became a tile and granite contractor, undertaking numerous residential and commercial projects throughout Western Washington. Tom was a highly skilled artisan and was a perfectionist in his work. He completed numerous challenging projects, including the renovation of the fountain at the Leopold Hotel in Bellingham and many high end residential projects. Tom was a passionate fisherman, crabber and shrimper. He loved his boat and enjoyed frequent trips to the San Juan Islands, Sekiu and Neah Bay. An avid skier, he enjoyed dozens of outings to Mt. Baker as well as trips to ski areas in Colorado. A kind and gentle man, Tom had a charismatic personality. He was a Mister Fix-It and was extremely generous with his time when friends were in need. He had many, many friends, both old and new, who loved him and who are today grieving his untimely loss. Tom is survived by his life partner, Lynn Loveland; brothers Craig LaPlante of San Marcos, CA, Pat LaPlante (Marla) of Arlington, VA; sisters Carol Wourenma (Bob) of Kirkland, WA, and Jane Kirk (Mike) of Suquamish, WA; stepsister Barb Mercier (Scott) of Bellevue, WA and stepbrother Greg Mercier (Laurie) of ID; aunt Mary Correia (Dick) of Shrewsbury, MA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Sylvia LaPlante and by his stepfather, Gordon Mercier. A celebration of Tom's life will be announced and held at a later date.

Think about my friend Tom a lot. Good guy and miss him. Sure he’s catching all kinds of fish now and doesn’t have to buy a license. Rest in peace my friend!!!

I'm met both Tom and Lynn through our mutual friends Don and Kif Brown. Just as Don figured Tom and I hit it off right away having a mutual love for all things boating and fishing. I thought about it many times i'm sad that we never had the opportunity to spend some time on the water together doing what we both loved. I will always remember his always positive attitude, the conversations that we shared and that million dollar smile was plastered on his face always.

Tom was my across the street neighbor & my tile guy. I saw him coming, going, tinkering on his car, boat or in his garden. He shared fish, crab & once gave me a tomato plant that produced the biggest tomato I've ever grown. He loved the free piles on curbs. I saw him one day wheeling his grill home from one of them & he fixed it up like new. He dropped his own plans and spent an hour one day tearing my daughters car door apart to fix her window that wouldn't roll up. He'd stop a project to chat with people (& dogs) walking by, He will be missed by so many & always remembered.

My brother-in-law and fishing buddy. Gone but not forgotten. Took him fishing for the first time in his life when he was 8 and that trip to Lake Langlois kindled the fire that burned in him for the rest of his life. Will miss our annual trips to Sekiu as well as the fishing pictures, texts and phone calls. Beyond all that, will miss his smile, knowledge and enthusiasm. A truly great fellow. RIP

Gonna miss you bud! Spoke to you at Hard. Sales couple months back and you were on the go as usual, always project oriented! I too had Tommy tile my bathroom and ever since often connected in the harbor at the launch or in the Islands chasing Spots or dungies! Got my flag at half-staff so, if any are cruising Roeder Ave do look up on the bank between Olympic boats and CityMac in remembrance to Tom!
Over and out,
Ranny

We are Shocked, Saddened & Grieving the loss of Tom, as many are...gone too soon...Such a great friend and a beacon of info on everything to do with fishing for my husband. They talked, texted or emailed weekly...all our tile has his signature on it and he will be a part of us always! I'll hold my pictures and videos more dearly now that I have of him... We love you Tommy Bahama! RIP
