Alice Johannsen
Alice Johannsen, 86, formerly of Southold, New York, passed away sud-denly at her home in Hen-dersonville, North Caro-lina on Sunday, August 5, 2018. Alice was pre-ceded in death by her de-voted husband of 31 years, Carsten Johanssen, as well as her only son, John Albertson.
Alice was born in Floral Park New York on Sep-tember 22,1931 to the late Lucy and James Wheeler and spent most of her life in Southold. After raising two children, she earned her Bachelor's Degree as well as a Master's Degree from Stony Brook Univer-sity in Nursing. Alice was passionate about the Hos-pice Movement and she was instrumental in the founding of the East End Hospice. Her efforts in that area continued after she moved to North Caro-lina, where she also worked with victims of domestic violence.
In addition to her nurs-ing career, Alice was a gifted and prolific artist, her talent having been discovered when she was a child. Her beautiful wa-tercolors have won nu-merous awards and many are currently on display in North Carolina. Although her talents and accom-plishments are notewor-thy, Alice Johannsen was perhaps best known by those who knew and loved her, as an extraordinary human being. Throughout her life, she has been a model of integrity, com-passion and unselfishness. Her acts of kindness are innumerable. She has truly left this world a much better place.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane Albertson-Kelly, and her husband, Robert Kelly as well as three stepchildren: Mi-chael Johannsen, Mark Johannsen and his wife, Suzanne, and Kristin Grantz , and her husband, Sherman. She is also sur-vived by eleven grand-children: Andrew Larsen and his wife,Julie, Jenni-fer Cunningham and her husband, Ben, Katherine Johnson and her husband, Matthew, Jill Cohen and her husband, Josh, John Albertson, Jr., Marc Jo-hannsen, Chris Johannsen and his wife, Kelly , Car-sten Johannsen and his wife, Sue, Kirstin Jeffries and her husband, Alec, Jeff Grantz, Dori Schmidt and her husband, Blaine; as well as 11 great-grandchildren: Joseph, Al-ice, Lily, Emery, Davis, Callan, Zeppelin, Preston, Aidan, Carsten and Jolene. In addition, she is also survived by: Jack Larsen and Carol Albertson, her niece, Barbara Mackinaw, as well as her former hus-band, Albert Albertson, who were all very special people in her life.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at the First Congre-gational United Church of Christ with the Reverend Michael Cleland officiat-ing.
