Barbara (Wood) Davenport Obituary
Barbara Wood Davenport, age 98, died on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Carolina Village after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, John Boynton Davenport, USN Retired Captain, her sister Margaret Helen Wood Bowers, and her brother Charles Wood. Surviving her are a niece Barbara Ann Weirich of Asheville, NC, a grand-niece, Debra Weirich Marshall of Fort Payne, AL, and a grand-nephew, Michael Weirich of Asheville, NC.
Barbara was born January 1, 1920 in Herkimer, NY to Charles Leland Wood and Georgianna May Hildebrandt Wood. After high school, Barbara attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1942. She worked one year for General Electric in Schenectady, NY and three years for American Airlines as a flight attendant and trainer. In 1946 she and John were married. After WWII, while John was in the Navy, they lived in various places including Albuquerque, NM, Bremerhaven, Germany, Washington, DC, England, and Heidelberg, Germany. Upon Johns' retirement from the Navy in 1965, they lived in Vermillion, SD, St. Cloud, MN and Poughkeepsie, NY before ultimately retiring to Hendersonville, NC in 1988.
Barbara enjoyed playing golf and bridge at the Hendersonville Country Club. She was not able to keep up these activities when she gave up driving at age 95 and sorely missed these times and her mobility. Carolina Village has been their home since 2004. The care that Barbara and John received from Carolina Village, and the friends that were made, were greatly appreciated.
No services are being planned. Memorial gifts may be made to Carolina Village, Inc., 600 Carolina Village Rd, Hendersonville, NC 28792. Forest Lawn Funeral Home is assisting.
