Larry Jones Obituary
Larry G. Jones, 74, of Cramerton, NC and Hendersonville, NC passed away on Friday, April 13 in Bradenton, FL following complications from the sudden onset of the flu. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Jones Leonetti; his father, Gordon Jones; and his mother, Lillie Sumner Jones.
Born in Henderson County, Larry graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from NC State University. He worked many years in the private sector before joining the US Environmental Protection Agency in the Research Triangle Park, NC in 1971. In a career spanning 37 years, Larry developed National Federal Regulations and directed research to define National emissions for both existing and new emissions levels. He became Chief of the Emissions and Modeling Branch where his responsibilities included development of emissions models for the National Acid Rain Program and instrumented mobile vehicles to measure actual on-road emissions. He retired in 2008 knowing that his life's work led to major revisions to vehicle control systems and filling the most significant gaps in the department's emissions database.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Janet Holbert Jones, who became his rock and greatest advocate through the years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother, Douglas E. Jones and wife Wendy of Hendersonville; son-in-law Thomas J. Leonetti; granddaughters, Anna Marie, 17, and Ashley Grace, 6 of Fort Mill, SC, who were the loves of his life; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A funeral service in his honor will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 538 Tracy Grove Road, Hendersonville, NC with Reverend Steven Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 2-3pm prior to the service in the chapel.
