Joyce Carol Blakely

Joyce Carol Montelius Blakely, 89 of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at Sunnybrook Assisted Living. A native of New Orleans, LA, she was the daughter of the late, Gloria Isabelle Pullen Montelius and Bert Hunter Montelius. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Gene Thornton Blakely; a daughter, Karen Leah Blakely; as well as five brothers.
Joyce had prior residences in Jacksonville, FL; San Antonio, TX; Monterey, CA; Quincy, FL; Hazlehurst, GA; Teheran, Iran; and has spent the past 45 years in Hendersonville. She graduated Tulane University with a degree in nursing and studied art with Zotan Szabo and John Pellew. Joyce taught art at Kanuga Conference and worked as a nurse in her husband's private practice. She was of the Christian Faith and was a member of The Pen Women, The Arts League, Gallery 20, Women Artists of America, Who's Who in International Art, Who's Who in American Art, and The Opportunity House respectfully.
Joyce is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Sharon Blakely Hawkins and her husband Larry Stephen Hawkins of Flat Rock; a son, Edward Dryden Blakely and his wife Lori Blakely of Nashville, TN; a sister, Gayle Stephenson of Suwanne, GA; a brother, Norman Montelius of Oceanside, CA; five grandchildren, David Hawkins, Christian Blakely, Marian Blakely, Stephanie Murtagh, Becky Hively; and eight great-grandchildren, Colton Blakely, Carson Blakely, Rose Blakely, Reagan Murtagh, Cathryn Murtagh, Jamie Murtagh, Madaline Hively, and Annalise Hively.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will take place in Bob's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
