Never forgotten. And would she were here (2024) to celebrate another woman running for president.

We were close friends in college, colleagues on the Collegian, student paper of the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), and then friends again fifty years later. I both admired and loved her and was thrilled when we reconnected in 2004, a few days after the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in her life. She was a remarkable person, extraordinarily smart, capable of great charm, and in college I liked to imagine her in politics, even, possibly, as president. She was too shy for electoral politics and anyway what she loved most was writing. She wrote books about politics, about the academy, about women lawyers, but she always had a tinge of regret that she had not followed a career as a newspaper writer. She loved journalism, remembered her years on the Collegian with gusto, became its executive editor, and after college considered taking a job on the Lowell Sun. Harvard Law won out, but the law never displaced her passion for journalism. or, for that matter, her love of the Red Sox. But whatever she did she did well and lived, as she hoped, a useful and honorable life in pursuit of her ideals of justice and equality.

Mona was among 5 girls that I went through Westford Academy high school. The five of us were great readers and often spent time at her home doing just that.We were the "Gonomies" and in a class by ourselves. Great times.
