GAIL E. HOROWITZ

HOROWITZ, Gail E. Of Cambridge, 67, died peacefully surrounded by loving family and friends on May 1, four and one-half years after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Gail was born in Washington Heights, NYC, and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey. Gail is survived by her beloved wife, Susan Brand, her brother, Jack Horowitz (Nancy Harm), her cousins, Jack Demick, Joan Kellerman, Judy Turner, and Teri Boutot, niece Katie Currin (Mike), nephew Dan Kellerman-Demick (Brittany Peters), and her Brand family in-laws. Her parents, Jerome and Leonore Horowitz, predeceased her. Gail was admitted in the first class of women and graduated from Yale College in 1974 and from Harvard Law School in 1986. She was a Vice President at Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City before law school and, afterwards, was a partner at Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen before founding Wade Horowitz LaPointe in 2000. Gail was a founding chair of both the Trusts and Estates Section of the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association and the Women's Bar Association's Elder Law Project. She lectured frequently regarding estate and gift tax planning, with a particular focus on planning for LGBTQ individuals and families. Gail nurtured within herself a deep spirituality which she gifted through her presence, her words, her work and her love to all who had the privilege to know her. Social justice and political activism were also important parts of her life. Gail loved Provincetown, where she and Susan have had a second home for 20 years, as well as swimming, running, hiking, cycling and being outside. She and Susan completed the Boston Marathon in 1996. And, just a month before her death, still living life to the fullest, she and Susan visited the Grand Canyon for the first time. Gail's funeral will be at the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St., WEST NEWTON, on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 12:30 pm. Gail will be interred at Mt. Auburn Cemetery on Monday, May 6, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. Memorial Observance (location to be announced at the funeral) will be held on Monday and Tuesday, May 6 and 7, 2019, at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gail's memory may be made to the ACLU of Massachusetts, the Greater Boston Food Bank, Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance of New York.
