Dr. Hermann's lectures on mathematical physics have a wonderful symbiosis of clarity and elegance, elegance not as much for its own sake, but going beyond aesthetics to be the basis of that clarity. I read those lectures as an undergraduate many years ago and always felt their welcoming warmth, which came through somehow even in that seemingly dry landscape of mathematical physics. I never met Dr. Hermann but always imagined him as a kind and encouraging presence through his work. Sad that he is gone.
