Ellen Shub was my friend and a dedicated photographer, feminist and total professional. We hung out together. At 5'5, although not tall, felt tall standing next to Ellen, but she was a tall person in other ways. She was sure of her purpose and dedicated to social justice, not in an easy way. She was a warrior and defender and made me proud to be part of the generation that took social justice personally and asked the question: What can I do to help?

When I edited Bay Windows, back in '86, '87, Shub was my go-to photographer for any kind of social justice event and many other kinds of events and personalities, too. She always groused about selling us photos "just for the money," as she found BW's politics to be suspect. Still, I was happy to be contributing to her work, and we usually managed to use at least a couple of her photos each week. She is one of those people whose absence makes our world a sadder place. My condolences to her family.

On behalf of the Boston Press Photographer's Association I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Ellen's family and friends. Her obituary was posted on our Facebook page by a member and another member remembered her fondly at a recent meeting. The Boston photography community grieves with you today. The last time I saw Ellen was when she had an exhibit of her photographs in the JP library a few years ago. We shared the same birth year and month, so I always felt a special connection to her. I was so sad to hear of her illness and her passing, but I am grateful that she lived in a special place in my heart, and she still does. My deepest condolences to Kathy and to Josh. May you find comfort in knowing you now have an angel to guide your every step. She will always be with all of us who knew, admired and loved her. ❤

At every march, protest, vigil or celebration related to social justice: there was Ellen. She was always keenly focused, kind and superbly good at her craft. From the 1980s forward, I came to know her as one of the most decent and stalwart members of our community and I always looked forward to seeing her and checking in. I loved hearing her speak of her immense love of and pride in her son, her love of her family, her thoughts on the politics of the day.. She will remain so much a part of the fabric of this community .... living on through the memories of those who love her and through her brilliant work. May her memory be a blessing.

I didn't know Ellen well and hadn't seen her in years, but we'd run into each other occasionally at public events, cameras in hand ready to document whatever unfolded. Ellen always greeted me with a warm smile, and seemed to have a calm, centered presence that I admired. Very sorry to hear of her passing, and she will be missed.

I didn't know Ellen well, and haven't seen her for many years now. But we'd run into each other occasionally at various public events, each of us with camera in hand to document whatever unfolded. "Shubie" and her camera were ever present at every march, demonstration or social justice event I can remember. She was an amazing photographer, a good and wonderful person and will be missed by so many. What a terrible loss!

She was a woman about town with a camera in hand, inquisitive, focused and New Jersey funny. So well loved by her tribe. We will miss you Ellen Shub.
