JOSEPH ESCOVITZ Obituary

ESCOVITZ, Dr. Joseph Hirsch Of Yarmouth Port, MA, passed away, at the age of 79, on July 7, 2025. Joe was born in Boston on December 25, 1945, to Maurice and Rose Escovitz. He graduated from Boston Latin School and earned a bachelor's degree from Brandeis University, followed by a master's and Ph.D. in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from McGill University. A historian and educator, Joe began his career teaching at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, as well as at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. He continued his work in nonprofits with fundraising roles at Brandeis University, Clark University, the Harvard School of Public Health, New York University, Stony Brook University, and Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital. Joe was an avid bicyclist and photographer, and he found joy in reading history and mystery books, watching The Godfather films, cheering on the Patriots and spending time on the beaches of Cape Cod. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Flavia; his children, Misha and Shereen; his granddaughter, Leila; daughter-in-law, Pinky; son-in-law, Christian; and nieces, Karen and Lisa. He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald. A Graveside Service was held at Woodside Cemetery in Yarmouth Port, on July 11. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Joe's memory with a donation to the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center or the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). May his memory be a blessing. My condolences on Joe's passing. We were close boyhood friends during our years together at Temple Israel's Sunday School all the way through Confirmation and Post Confirmation and performed together in the Teenage Temple Players program. We both had a strong love of theatre and continued to see each other frequently during our college years (1963-'67). I had a friend in college in New York, whose parents gave me their T-Bird, some cash, and a credit card to bring her seasonal changes of clothing. I'd call Joe, and off we'd go together. We'd stay at brother Geralds's apartment in Brooklyn as Gerry and his wife worked the night shift at Kings County Hospital in those days, Joe in their bed and me on the couch. We'd take the train to Broadway because in those days we could get really cheap standing room tickets to all the plays, leaning on our coats spread over the cap rail of the low wall at the back of the orchestra seating area, after having an early bird pre-show special low price meal deal at Mama Leone's, a well-known restaurant, or sharing one enormous pastrami sandwich at the Stage Deli. Then we'd drive back to Boston the following day, and the big treat on the Berlin Turnpike in Connecticut was this new fast food place call McDonalds, where we'd gorge on 15cent burgers. We lost touch after college, yet seeing Joe's obituary and seeing us together in my mind's eye brings back great memories. I hope the Family enjoys these recollections. May his memory by a Blessing.
