EDITH SINGAL-KATZ

1922 - 2021

SINGAL KATZ, Edith Age 98, of Newton, formerly of Florida, died peacefully at home on April 23, 2021 from natural causes. Edith was born on August 8th, 1922 and grew up in Boston's Back Bay and Brighton. As a high school freshman, she wrote a prize-winning short story and continued to write for another sixty years. Sports were an integral part of her school years. Her nickname was Speedy Edie and she enjoyed golf and tennis into her eighties. After attending Bryant & Stratton, Edith proudly worked at the South Boston Army Base during WWII. She then became the Secretary at Temple Emanuel, Newton, until her marriage to S. Richard Singal. As a housewife and mother raising two children, she was her own handy-woman, often doing her own house painting, gardening and other tasks, and developing a wonderful sense of style and interior design. Charity was important in her life. She was active in many philanthropic organizations, including Combined Jewish Philanthropies, Temple Emanuel Sisterhood, Hadassah and the Brandeis Women's Club. Edith and her late husband were founders of Temple Israel in Natick. She also was co-founder, with her husband and his two brothers, of the Singal Gymnasium at the Brookline-Brighton JCC. Edith loved to travel and did so extensively into her late eighties. Her final trip was to Australia and New Zealand. She is survived by her children, Bruce Singal and Nancy Feld (Randy); by her grandchildren, Jesse, Gabe (Jen), Alex, Adam (Christine), Amanda (Michael); and by her great-grandchildren, Riley, Cameron, Penelope, Isabella, and Logan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hadassah.
