GERDA NORVIG Obituary

Norvig, Gerda Stein
81, of Cambridge, MA, passed away on November 15, 2013 after a three-year struggle with cancer. She was a noted William Blake scholar, and a lover and collector of both books and Ph.Ds: one doctorate in English Literature & another in Clinical Psychology. She is known for her book "Dark Figures in the Desired Country: Blake's Illustrations to The Pilgrim's Progress" and other scholarly works integrating romantic literature, visual arts, poetry, and psychotherapy. She taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder, for many years. Born in New York, she also lived in Boston, Los Angeles, and Boulder. She was married to Torsten Norvig from 1951 until his death in 1976. She is survived by her three children: Peter (and his wife Kristan Norvig), Marc (and his wife Anne Starr), and Laura (and her husband Jeffrey Holmquist), and her three grandchildren, Isabella Norvig, Juliet Norvig, and Wade Holmquist. Visiting hours and memorial will be held in Cambridge on January 11th and 12th. email [email protected] for details. Donations may be made in her memory to The Nature Conservancy.

Gerda was our next door neighbor in Boulder for many years. We very much enjoyed our conversations and interactions with her during that time. We also got to know her brother, Ted, and we extend our condolences to all of the family. She will be missed.
