J. Albertson Obituary

ALBERTSON, J. Jeffrey Professional photographer and publisher whose work spanned four decades and included a number of musicians, died recently at his home in Fort Lee, NJ. Born on Sept. 13, 1948 to Frank and Marion Albertson, Jeff attended Reading, Mass. High School, McGill University and Boston University. It was while he was at BU that the Boston Globe hired him as a photographer. After graduation, in the 1970s, Jeff became a fixture in the Boston media world, serving as photo editor of the Boston Phoenix, co-owner and associate publisher of the Real Paper and Boston-based stringer for Rolling Stone, People Magazine and Boston Magazine. His subjects included John Lennon, Mohammed Ali, Elvis Presley Bruce Springsteen, Abbie Hoffman and Fay Dunaway. He also shot a number of album covers, including those of Boston and the Cars' platinum-award-winning "Candy-O." In the 1980s, he moved to New York City, where he met his wife Charlene Laino and became photo editor and then vice president of the Medical Tribune News Group, whose many outlets included the New York Times Syndicated Medical Tribune News Service. In the 1990s, Jeff was among the first to realize the potential of using the Internet as an outlet for news and helped to launch several Internet sites dedicated to health coverage. He is represented by the Corbis Agency, whose Web site displays many of his photos. Intelligent, with quick wit and a magnificent sense of humor, Jeff lived life on his own terms and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Laino, of Fort Lee, NJ; his sister and brother-in-law Kris and Alan Stata, of Clovis, New Mexico; his father-in-law & mother-in-law, Charles and Eileen Laino & a multitude of friends

Jeff Albertson was the coolest person I had ever met. Handsome, brash and funny, he was always interesting to be around. I still remember his hilarious one liners. Rest in peace. Susan Vermazen (Newton, MA)

I don't know why he had to go at such an early age but one thing's for sure- Jeff certainly lived life fearlessly and on his own terms. Everyone should have what Jeff had...a wife that adored him, an eye for beauty, a wicked sense of humor and intelligence that just leveled everyone he came in contact with. On a personal note, I thank him for encouraging me to follow in his footsteps. An endorsement from Jeff carried the weight of every other person that looked at my book, combined. He considered me his sister-in-law and we had completely insane times together and he showed me sides to him that most people would doubt ever existed. Mike and I miss him terribly, but don't worry Jeff, we've got an eye on Charlene.

As a friend of Jeff's sister, Kristen, I was so sorry to hear of Jeff's passing. It was great to read about all of his accomplishments and with his super wit, I'm sure he made many others happy.Heartfelt sympathies go to his family from us here in Rochester, MA.

I'm very sorry to hear about Jeff. He was a close friend during high school and college . We were in the same classes in HS with the same attitudes and interests in music, etc., etc. He was a very smart guy who made me laugh constantly. Even though I haven't seen him since the ealry 70's, I'll miss him. Over the years I tried to track him down many times with no luck. I remember: We had a jug band in high school, we went to the Club 47 in Harvard Square dozens of time, including the last month it was open when everyone cool came back to perform. Jeff took lots of pics. We got beat up and robbed in Boston ca. 1966 on the way to the Unicorn Coffee House when a big group of frat boys didn't like our long hair. He and I had a lobster (diving) business in Rockport one summer...best job I ever had! We had an apartment in Dorchester that we only used for partying. His Ford Falcon station wagon got broken into and some of our diving equipment was stolen. We drove to Portland Maine on his motorcycle to attend an amazing party. He signed his photo in my HS yearbook with one word.... WAC, an (affectionate greeting we used back then). We got along great and I wish we'd connected again. Jeff, I'm really pissed you didn't call me!!
