MELDON, Jerry Dedicated

Professor Of Hopkinton, Massachusetts passed away unexpectedly in Southmont, North Carolina on July 18, 2017. Jerry was born in New York City on October 23, 1947 to Helen and George Meldon. He attended Stuyvesant High School, earned his Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering from Cooper Union and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and completed his post-doctoral studies at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense.

He was a man of strong moral convictions with a wry sense of humor, and a generosity of spirit that charmed devoted friends from many walks of life and many corners of the globe that he so loved to travel. As a scientist and professor of chemical engineering at Tufts University, he left an enduring impression on countless students, and made important contributions to the field. He was a passionate and tireless champion for peace and justice, and a voracious reader of scholarly works of political history and current events. His keen writings on topics related to deep politics and foreign affairs were published in the Boston Globe, Consortium News, and elsewhere.

As a devoted husband, father, brother and friend, he enjoyed listening to all genres of music especially doo-wop, summers on Martha's Vineyard with his family, and discussing different points of view with anyone willing to listen.

A tenured associate professor in the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Tufts University, Jerry previously served as the chairman of the department and was also a proud member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Jerry is survived by his wife Robin, his sister Anne, and his children Jamie, Perri and Seth.

The funeral is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, at Pine Grove Cemetery, South Street, Westborough, Massachusetts. Rabbi Jeffrey Summit of Tufts University will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jerry's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Trustees of Reservations or the American Civil Liberties Union. The family will be sitting shiva on Monday, July 24 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m., and on Tuesday, July 25 and Wednesday, July 26 from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. For information on sitting shiva and condolences, please email JerryMeldonMemorial@gmail.com.

Jerry was a Mensch. Although he was loaded with degrees and publications, he was a beautiful guy, with a huge, loving heart, who loved his family, life and a good laugh. It is hard to imagine the world without his smile and wry sense of humor. May his memory be forever be blessed and May all who mourn him be comforted among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, Ronna Kabatznick and Peter Dale Scott

Very sad to hear about Jerry one year shy of our 50th Cooper Union class reunion. I've seen him several times during the intervening years and have met Tufts alumni several times who have described Jerry as the best professor they ever had. My condolences to his family and all who knew him.

Sorrow for your loss. The descriptions of Jerry as an attentive compassionate person are so much like the person I first met in 1964. My memories of Jerry as an engineering classmate at Cooper Union are still very strong. An intelligent and witty friend, always willing to help those of us, myself included, wallowing thru some complex engineering problem (usually a "Schiebel problem"). Please extend our heartfelt condolences to all of his extended family.

It is nearly 50 years since we graduated Cooper together and I haven't seen Jerry since then, but I still have very fond memories of him as a strong member of the ChE '68 class. I was truly saddened to hear of his passing and I extend my deepest condolences to his family.

I'll miss Jerry. He had a wonderful smile and a wry sense of humor, and a knack for recognizing the humanity in others. I fondly recall his firm conviction that the office copy machine at ChBE had it in for him. You've gone too soon, Jerry. May your memory be a blessing for all those who knew and loved you.

Saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. He would attend our Lower East Side reunions and bring his profound energy and warmth each time. After not seeing him for many years, his smile and humility transcended the years and made me feel like it was just yesterday that we were just hanging out in the back of the co-op. I will never forget him. Love to his family from the Goldman/Gottlieb family.
