I knew Norm from Cass Tech High School - he was the first boy I ever kissed, as well as the concertmaster of the band and a fellow clarinetist. He set the bar so high as a musician, playing the Nielsen Clarinet Concerto while still in high school. I remember him as a most determined person who had big goals and the energy to pursue them. My condolences to Marion and the kids, as well as to his sister, brother and their families.

Today I learned of the passing of truly
one of the special lights in my life -
Norman Letvin. I attended Cass Tech and graduated with Norman...he went on to Harvard where I visited and in the summer of 1963 attend National Music Camp as a violinist with Norman where as a Junior he became concertmaster of the High School and University Orchestra.
His energy and generosity of time and spirit were always evident...I last saw Normal at our 40th year High School reunion...in Detroit the summer of 2007...where he
graciously gave of his time to everyone....and said to me....."don't go far away, I want to spend time and talk with you"...and so we chatted, laughed, reminisced, albeit too short of time...and we went on our way....
The last time I would see Norman...
Today I learned of his passing....
and to all who knew Norman, for everyone his life touched,
we will remember, the wonderful smile
the unstoppable will, the endless,
energy to pursue his dreams and goals
and a gentle human being...perhaps..
an angel......Norman, may you rest in eternal peace....your earthly duties all done now.....all done well...the very best humanly possible.....
your friend,
Bob Beitman,M.D.

I attended Cass Technical High School with Norm, and we played many wonderful concerts together there and on tour. He was an incredible person - always striving for the very best, with energy and commitment, and achieving remarkable results!! I was fortunate to play L'histoire du Soldat with him a few years ago shortly before he was diagnosed. Last night I went home and played a recording I have of him playing a Weber Clarinet Concerto at Cass - Wow. It was like saying a final good bye to a dear friend, and brought back so many wonderful memories.
I will always remember you Norm for your amazing talent, energy, and caring friendship. Thank you for sharing it with us. You are truly the best of the best. Thank you, and my very sincerest condolences to all of your family.

I was a colleague of Norm's and had the pleasure of having a dinner with him at a scientific meeting in Colorado years ago. His love for his family radiated from him in the stories he told. He was a great man and a great scientist.
On behalf of myself and many of my colleagues at Johns Hopkins, our most sincere condolences go out to his family.

I was so sorry to hear of Norman's death. He was truly one of the "good ones" in our society. He was also a cousin and I had lost touch with him Our deepest sympathies to his whole family. Karen and Steven Feldman

I knew Norman at Hebrew school and at Cass Tech. In 10th grade he was asked to read aloud an essay he had written for English. He was embarrassed and didn't want to, but he did. He was afraid everyone would laugh. The essay was about how he found consolation in the arts when he was down. No one laughed. Everyone nodded and we learned that he was sensitive as well as smart. At Hebrew school, he wrote a play about a man who wants to be a painter in ancient Judea, despite the ban on graven images. At a high school reunion, he told me he learned more about life from his high school orchestra conductor and from playing with his colleagues than anything else. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Marion and their children. I am so sorry for their loss.

Norm was a fellow classmate at Cass Tech. I served as a reporter when he edited the Cass Technician. He set an example on how to live--he used his talents well and joyously, and cared deeply about many people. I was so pleased to reconnect with him at the 40th CT reunion, and will miss him deeply at the 45th this summer.
Condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends who were blessed to share in his life.

Norm inspired me to become an immunologist, and I owe my career to his guidance and support. I worked in Norm's lab for two years as an undergraduate, and it was Norm who encouraged me to pursue my PhD at Harvard. He was a life-changing mentor, and I am very sad to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to his family, especially to his wife, whom Norm always spoke of with the highest regard.

I am so saddened to hear of Norm's passing. I spent a year at Harvard in Norm's lab, and during that time, he was a superb scientific mentor, teaching me principles of scientific research and scientific mentoring that I use to this day, but he was also a mentor of how to live a good life as well. He was a wonderful role model for balancing dedication to family as well as dedication to science. We shared a passion for the clarinet, and played duets in his office. I learned so much from him about being a good scientist and person, and he supported my blossoming relationship with my now husband during that year. He is unforgettable. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

This is heartbreaking news. My father and I first knew Norm at Interlochen in the 60's as my father's clarinet student, and then decades later as the father and uncle of campers. My daughter and son-in-law came to know and greatly appreciate Norm in his scientific realm in Boston. Both music and science have lost a great talent. Our deepest condolences to the family.

Norm and I were classmates at Detroit's Cass Technical High School, and became good friends the summer before he left for Harvard. It was with great sadness that I learned of his passing. He was brilliant and driven, as well as kind and selfless in his work as well as in his devotion to family and friends. He made tremendous contributions to society, but never at the expense of those he cared about. He will be greatly missed.

Seeing Norm at our 20th Cass reunion brought back all the fun & rapid focus of which he was always capable. Family, medicine, & music meant everything to him ... and he loved to laugh! I loved that about him. Packing his life with those things that really make a difference resulted in a joy filled man & friend who will be missed.

Norm and I were friends at National Music Camp at Interlochen, and then reconnected when we found ourselves at Harvard together. I sang in the chorus when we performed Beethoven's Ninth with the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra. He had the clarinet solo in the Turkish March, and I remember him rocking out as he played it. Such joy he found in music! My heart goes out to his family and friends.

I attended high school with Norm and played in the Symphony Band with him. He was a brilliant professor and physician and if he had gone in a different direction, he would have been a world class clarinet player.
I know his brother David and his sister Judy, and send my condolences to his whole family
