1941 - 2018
WINIG, Paul Ira, M.D. Beloved Family Man, Physician and Teacher Paul Ira Winig, M.D. died September 9, 2018 at age 77 at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham, MA. Cherished husband of 51 years of Maxine (Paisner) Winig. Beloved father of three sons, Andrew Winig of Needham, MA and his wife Carol Palmer Winig and their children Emily and Allison, Eric Winig of Potomac, MD and his wife Jennifer Capparella and their children Benjamin and Gabriella, and Steven Winig of Needham, MA and his wife Sarah Winig and their children Max and Rachel. Beloved brother of Hugh Winig of Lafayette, CA and his wife Mary Anne, and Uncle to their three children. Paul was born in Albany, New York to Jerome D. and Jessica C. Winig on February 10, 1941. He grew up in Trenton, New Jersey from the age of 7 until he graduated from Trenton Central High School. He graduated from Harvard College in 1962 where he had been a member of the Varsity Fencing team for three years. At Harvard Medical School he met his future wife Maxine. They were married the same year he graduated in 1966. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1971. He served as a Major in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1973, stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. Paul and his family returned to the Boston area after his military service. He had private practices in Obstetrics and Gynecology and at Harvard Student Health Services. He was on the staff at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital. Paul was also on the clinical faculty of Harvard Medical School where he was instrumental in developing the next generation of doctors. Paul loved science and he loved taking care of his patients. Patients describe him as an old-fashioned doctor in the best sense: he is one of the most kind, caring, and reassuring doctors. He wasn't just my doctor – he was a friend. I wish all my doctors were like him. Paul takes care of me and all my friends. I hope his heart soars, when he reflects on his helpfulness to so many, and how well-regarded he will always be! Paul had the pleasure of watching the children he delivered grow up and was particularly delighted when they came to him to deliver their own children. Members of the family smile when they hear "are you related to Paul Winig" because they know they are about to hear a story of how much he was loved. Paul loved his patients so much that he continued his part time clinical practice right up until his death. While Paul was an exceptional doctor, his greatest joy in life was his soulmate Maxine and their family. In particular as Grandpa, there was always a twinkle in his eye and a big smile when spending time with his grandchildren. He often gushed about his grandchildren, whether they were reading a story, swimming, doing science experiments, sharing dessert, or spending time at the beach house. A private burial was held. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 13 from 4:00pm to 4:30pm in the Conservatory at NewBridge on the Charles, 5000 Great Meadow Road, Community Center, Dedham followed by a shiva reception until 7:00pm. Please park in the Community Center parking lot. Guests will be directed to the Conservatory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Combined Jewish Philanthropies (cjp.org) or Jewish National Fund (jnf.org). Levine Chapels, Brookline 617-277-8300 www.levinechapel.com
