I was a client of Bob's rare book business since 1987. I was collecting American economics and banking, and Bob was the leading rare book dealer in that area. I learned so much from Bob that I referred to him as my rare book guru. My first visit to his apartment, where he kept his stock, I have always looked back on as my visit to Aladdin's Cave. As I'm sure all of his customers and fellow rare book dealers would agree, he was truly a gentleman and a scholar. He also knew how to share a good laugh. In the mid-1990s I told him a story that he would occasionally mention years later. I worked for the federal government then. One day I was was on the phone, when my Secretary came racing to my office door to inform me that Bob Rubin was on the line. She thought it was Robert Rubin, the then Secretary of the Treasury. But it was Bob Rubin the bookseller. My Bob Rubin really liked that story. And I really enjoyed knowing and learning from my Bob Rubin.
