RUSSELL BROAD Obituary

BROAD, Russell Sheldon Jr. Of Naples, FL, passed away peacefully, with family by his side, on February 10, 2026. He was 91. Born and raised in Newton, MA, he was the son of Russell and Hazel Broad; and grew up alongside his younger sister, Priscilla. He graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon in 1952 and Yale University in 1956. In 1957, Russ joined the U.S. Navy and spent three years in the service, including international missions on the USS Joseph K. Taussig. He completed his service with the rank of lieutenant. Until his final day, he remained deeply proud of his service to his country and was a steadfast supporter of veterans. Working for more than four decades, Russ spent his entire career in the financial services industry. He began his career in institutional sales before becoming a stockbroker at Kidder Peabody, UBS and ultimately Stifel. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Laura Peabody Broad, in 2008. The two met during the summer of 1955, while both were working at Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod, she as a nanny and he as a bellhop. They were married on June 27, 1959, in Springfield, MA, and eventually settled in Needham, MA, where they lived for more than 46 years while raising their family. He is the beloved father and grandfather to an extended, bicoastal family: Ken and Jackie Broad of Mill Valley, CA; and their children, Madelyn, Alyssa and Jared; Laurie and Tim Grenier of East Greenwich, RI; and their children, Justin, Anna and Daniel; and Doug and Kim Broad of North Grafton, MA; and their children, Meredith, Jackson and Kate. Russ is also survived by his sister, Priscilla Weston of Hermosa Beach, CA; his nephew, Will Weston of Hermosa Beach and his family; as well as Chris Ann Mispagel of Raleigh, NC and her family. In 2010, Russ married Nancy Sinclair Simpson. They enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and sharing their retirement years between Sanibel Island, Naples and Dover, MA, until her passing in 2014. In his final years, Russ lived independently in Naples, first in The Vineyards and later at The Carlisle, where he formed close friendships centered around playing cards, political discussions, live music at happy hours and shared nightly dinners. Throughout his life, Russ loved skiing, tennis, playing cards and backgammon, watching Patriots games, boating and being at the beach, especially surrounded by family at their treasured "Driftwood" cottage on Nauset Beach in Chatham, MA. After a long and fulfilling life, rich in travel, experiences and deep devotion to family and friends, he will be remembered for his sayings, habits, stories and steady presence that made him Dad, Grandpa B and a dear friend to so many. For those who miss him, he is forever parallel skiing down a packed powder run at Waterville Valley, sailing a reach across Pleasant Bay or getting ready for a dinner of raw oysters and fried clams (with extra tartar sauce), followed by the biggest fireworks display imaginable. The family plans a private Celebration of his Life next summer on Cape Cod.

So sorry to hear of Russ's passing recently. I was a rookie stock broker at Kidder, Peabody & Co. back in the fall of 1982. My desk was very close to Russ's and I could constantly hear him with him talking with his clients in that deep and recognizable voice. He mainly focused on Electric utilities given it's stable and reliable return characteristics. I often called on him for help and he was very eager to lend a hand to assist me. He often mailed out pieces of research from the WSJ and our own pieces from in-house research. He was a wonderful man and reading his obit, I realized he had many other interests outside of the office. He made a difference in my career and I wanted to the family to know that. Again, so sorry for your loss.
