LEESON, Dr. Stanley Of West Newton, MA, died peacefully at home on Holy Thursday, April 1, 2021. He was born on February 10, 1934 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He left home as a young adult to receive his medical degree from University College Cork in Cork, Ireland, and then became an attending at Middlesex Hospital in London, England. During an Anesthesia conference in London, he met and was recruited by Dr. Leroy Vandam, and was asked to join his department for one-year at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, MA in 1970. Stanley continued working there for 43 years until his retirement at 79. In 1976, he met the love of his life, Betty (Chang) Leeson at a dance, and on September 10, 1977 they married. They raised a family of four in West Newton, MA and have four beautiful grandchildren. Stanley was a respected anesthesiologist and colleague. He was often the first to arrive in the operating room at 6:00 am, snow or shine, and one of the only few who drove to work during the height of the Blizzard of '78. His calm demeanor and vast knowledge was revered by staff, especially on the days he was running the floor of the operating rooms, but his true passion was teaching. Whether he was educating Brigham residents on the life-saving intricacies of anesthesia or how to care for patients with compassionate bedside manner. Or perhaps his most favorite teachings was the proper way to eat a lobster. Any family member or friend will tell you this is a memory they will hold dear. He was a devout parishioner of Sacred Heart Church of Newton Centre, and a master of cooking and baking such delights as apple pie, pancakes, scones, and the occasional beef wellington. He also enjoyed a challenging game of chess and was usually victorious. Watching Jeopardy and doing the Sunday crossword puzzles were also some of his favorite pastimes. The Leeson family would like to give special thanks to all who have supported Stanley throughout the years, including Hugh, Christina, Geoffrey, Victor, George, Becky, Pamela, Colleagues from the Brigham & Women's Hospital Thoracic Anesthesia Department, Good Shepherd, Kelsey, Rachel & Angela. Visiting Hours: Stanley was never one to be the center of attention, and per his wishes there will be no official services. Please remember him and live as he did loving your family and giving generously to friends and patients.
