McINTYRE, Thomas Joseph Of Mission Hill, Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury, passed from this life on Monday, November 12, 2018.
Pre-deceased by his wife Katherine Bowen McIntyre, also of Mission Hill. Proud father of Judith of Needham, Alice of West Roxbury, Susan of St. Petersburg, Fla, Tricia of Boston, Carol Gallagher and husband Joe of Hyde Park, Jean Maras and husband Stephen of Scituate, Kate Jacobs and husband Greg of Needham, Thomas of West Roxbury and Joseph and wife Barrett of New York City. Pre-deceased by parents Alice and Cornelius, brothers Eugene, John, and Richard and sister Audrey.
Devoted Grampa of Kayla, Audrey, Leah, Danny, Seth, David, Ava, Clara, Liam, Ella, Josie, Griffin, Rhys and Kira.
Tom was a lifelong member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman Union, Local 103, Boston. A "brickie," a Supervisor of Apprentices, and eventually 10th Vice President of the International Union, he remained on the forefront of the development, growth and vitality of all Labor Unions, and their importance to the lives of workers and their families. Passionate about affordable housing, he formed, with Pat Walsh, the Bricklayers and Laborers Non-Profit Corporation and pioneered the innovative collaboration of Boston's Labor Unions, Boston City Hall and the city's financial institutions in designing and constructing affordable housing for working class citizens in South Boston, Dorchester, Mission Hill, and the award-winning Building 104, Senior Housing, in the Charlestown Navy Yard.
A staunch and avid Democrat, he supported and campaigned for Democratic candidates on the local and state level beginning in the 1960's. He was proud and honored to have been chosen by the Massachusetts delegation to announce the nomination of Governor Michael Dukakis for President at the Democratic National Convention in 1988.
A devoted fan, and season ticket-holder of the Boston College Eagles, he had fond memories of bringing his two young sons to football practices to watch a young kid named Doug Flutie make his way up the ranks. He was delighted that his grandchildren continue this BC tradition.
Through his wife Katherine's involvement, Tom became an ardent supporter and enthusiastic fund-raiser for the Jamaica Plain Footlight Club raising several thousands of dollars over many years for the restoration and continuation of America's oldest continuing community theater.
As comfortable on-stage as off, he was a devoted and unabashed fan of "New Kids on the Block" and delighted in his son's success. He was well-known and loved by New Kids fans around the world and thoroughly enjoyed his role as a "New Kids" dad.
A friend of Bill W. for over 46 years he made life-long friendships and unshakeable bonds that steered him through difficult times and carried him through to the end.
A rank-and-filer who never forgot where he came from, he considered his life a great bit o' business.
Tom's family would like to extend their deep appreciation to his doctors, nurses and the caregiving teams that helped him through his final days with family and friends at the German Home Edelweiss Assisted Living.
Family and friends will celebrate and remember Tom's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robert J. Lawler and Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St., WEST ROXBURY, on Friday Nov. 16, from 3:00 to 8:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help, (Mission Church) 1545 Tremont St., Boston on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 10:00am. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital, Boston, MA.
To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
I still remember Mr.Mcintyre giving me a ride back home when I was 15. Joe and I had taken the orange line downtown to watch Back To The Future in 1985. Thank you. Rest in in eternal peace.

Tom probably wouldn't remember me, but I remember the one evening I spent with him like it was yesterday. It was 1989. At World Trade Center, Boston. I was an intern with "Boston's 10-in-a-row hit music station" 94.5 WZOU. I was one of 2 people in charge of the sound system and I met Tom after the show backstage. Tom had no idea how he changed my life that night, and the reason I'm posting this now in 2020 is because I went to look him up to say "Thank you" and that's how I found out of his passing. While others backstage were not so kind, I felt a Grandpa-like sense of a caring in Tom. I still feel it just looking at his smiling photo. Tom gave me advice, encouragement, and made me feel like people want to experience me and all I had to offer the world. He introduced me to his son, Joe, who hung out with me for 30 minutes or so, just chatting. From both Tom and Joe, I felt that old school Bostonian neighborly feeling. A feeling that showed me I was to become someone. And I credit Tom for much of my success. When I met him I had been a mobile DJ doing school dances and a few company outings. But after I met him and Joe, I listened to his advice, changed a few things around, became "Jammin Joel," and I soon had a 2 year waiting list to book me for any weekend event. I also began hosting celebrity events and movie wrap parties from Boston to Los Angeles, and for a period of time, partnered with several WWE superstars. Tom's simple words of wisdom and kindness, and his celebrity son's down to earth demeanor (can clearly see where that comes from), was what did it for me -- it was the start of my 35 year career in mobile entertainment.
Joe, I haven't spoken to you in decades, not by choice, but more so because you forgot to give me your number. LOL. But I am so sorry that you have lost this great man. Please accept my condolences and know how special, encouraging, and influential he was to me in the one hour that i knew him. And how highly I have always thought of both him and you since that one night that changed my life forever. From the bottom of my heart, Tom, THANK YOU. May God always bless the McIntyre family.

I was in Boston on vacation in April and I did what I always used to do,I drove by Mr. Mac's house. It was so hard to know but he wasn't there and see that the house was for sale it broke my heart again! There will never be anybody in this world like Thomas Joseph McIntyre! He was an original, definitely one of a kind. When my friend Mary and I used to live in Boston he was our Boston dad if we needed anything we knew we could go see him! Many times we wouldn't go and just hang out with him with or be sitting on the porch talking or going inside and watching videos of Joe and the guys. He was such a proud man he was so proud of Joe but it wasn't Joe, he was proud of all of his kids equally. Like someone else said I'm here the gates of heaven open wide to welcome him in I believe that's true! I think he's up in heaven with his beautiful wife Kay, Betty Wood, and Mr Wahlberg and they are with the New Kids fans that have passed away still cheering the Boys In The Band on!!!!

I was so sorry to read this. I saw the story about Joey in the Boston Herald and learned of Mr. McIntyre's passing. He was such an exceptional person. I was a young single Mom with 2 children and he sold me my first house in 1992. He never left after that sale and guided me through difficult times with surrounding condo association and was always there to give great advice. I am sure the gates of heaven opened up wide to usher him in with great majesty. God Bless you McIntyre family, he was the best that God could possibly give. Amen. Vanessa Scott

Hello, To the family of Mr. McIntyre, I am so sorry for your loss which must be particularly deeply felt during this holiday season. I don't wish to be intrusive during this time but would like family and friends to know that I found a memorial service card for Mr. McIntyre in the woman's restroom of the Westwood MA Target store the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving holiday. I imagine perhaps you may have several of these cards but in case you do not and would like it back I have held onto it and I am happy to drop it in the mail for you. I have been worrying it belongs to an immediate family member who is upset they have misplaced it. In trying to track down the owner of the card I of course came across Mr. McIntyre's obituary and would like his family to know how deeply touched I was to learn of all he has done for our city, particularly around affordable housing. To whomever lost the card, if you would like me to return it please do contact me at [email protected]. I am happy to do so.With warm wishes for peace and comforting memories in all the days ahead,Sincerely Rebecca Brophy of West Roxbury

Although we have never met, reading the words of all who loved him, I feel I have known him for a lifetime. The love, compassion and honor of Mr. McIntyre is truly inspiring. I'm sure his family would agree that those shoes would be very difficult to fill. But I think he gave them some credible characteristics, heart and soul to work with. They are all doing a pretty damn good job. He will be missed and treasured. But the legacy he left behind will be in everyone's hearts forever.

Was privileged to meet Mr. McIntyre years ago in JP. He was so kind to come out of his home and speak to a small group of NKOTB fans that included me, my sister, and one of my best friends. He was funny and very welcoming, never making us feel that we were intruding. One of my fondest memories all these years later. A gem of a man, gone too soon. You'll be missed, Mr. Mac! RIP

Years ago my best friend Mary and I used to go to Boston on vacation. On one of our vacations we had tickets to see a show at the Footlight and during the intermission Mr. Mac introduced Mary and I to EVERYONE as "his girls" and then told everyone that the grapes that were being served were fresh picked Western New York grapes that "his girls" brought him. After a few vacations we loved the area so much we moved to Boston. We had already met Mr. Mac but when we moved he became our "Boston Dad" we were told if we ever needed anything to just let him know. We would go by the house every so often just to check in with him, sometimes we would just sit on the porch and talk, sometimes we would go in and watch videos with him ( of course they were of his Joseph ) He was thrilled that we got him a tape of New Kids at the Apollo, as soon as we delivered that we had to go in and watch it. He was so excited to see it again after all those yearsBack on NYE 1999, Mary, her sister, a friend and I had tickets for Joe's NYE show.. Mr. Mac saw us in line and said "my girls don't stand in lines" with that said we were allowed inside before the doors were even opened. He was just a kind, sweet, caring man I know that he will be missed by all that ever met him!! Rest In Peace Mr. Mac! My Thoughts, Prayers and Sympathy go out to the entire McIntyre Family know that during this time you are not alone in your loss, you extended family is bigger than you can imagine and you are on ALL of minds during this time.
