Sonia Mercedes Morales Puopolo, 58, died on September 11 on American Airlines Flight 11. Sonia Mercedes Morales Puopolo, an internationally recognized leader in philanthropy and politics as well as a patron of the arts, devoted herself to enriching the lives of others. Sonia was a major contributor, board member and supporter of organizations in New England, Florida and California including the American Red Cross, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, AIDS Action Committee, the American Cancer Society as well as several other medical research foundations. In Massachusetts, Sonia was a patron and lifetime member of the Friends of the Emerson Majestic Theatre. She was a supporter of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the Nantucket Animal Hospital and the Nantucket Historical Association. In Florida, she was a Miami City Ballet board member and a key supporter of the American Red Cross, Voices for (Battered) Children, and the Jackson Memorial Hospital Foundation among many others. Mrs. Puopolo, beloved wife of 37 years of Dominic J. Puopolo Sr. of Dover, Nantucket and Miami was also a loving and devoted mother of Dominic Jr., 35, Mark Anthony, 29, and Sonia "Tita", 28. Daughter of Mercedes (deceased) and Armando Morales and sister of Lucy Maldonado and Margarita Morales (Orlando, Florida), Jose Morales (Boston, Massachusetts) and George Morales (Puerto Rico). The Puopolo family requests that friends make donations in honor of Sonia Mercedes Morales Puopolo to the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay, American Cancer Society, GLAAD, Miami City Ballet, Friends of the Emerson Majestic Theatre and Voices for Children. A celebration of Mrs. Puopolo's life will be held at Trinity Church in Boston on Saturday, October 6 at 11 a.m.
