FOSTER HJALMAR NYSTROM

1913 - 2015

Nystrom, Foster Hjalmar Age 102, passed away on October 24, 2015 at Sweet Brook Care Center in Williamstown, MA. Born in Waltham, MA in 1913, he attended Mass. College of Art and Pratt Institute, and worked at Russ Craft Cards in Boston. An avid skier, Foster volunteered for the 10th Mt. Division during WWII, went to Northern Italy, conducted reconnaissance, and built sand table models for strategic planning. He was a Bronze Star Master Sergeant. Foster married Edna Stromberg in 1946, moved to Lincoln, MA, and was Assistant Director of the De Cordova Museum and head of their art school for 25 years. He then moved to Orleans MA, and taught watercolor painting at his studio and the Cape Cod Conservatory in Barnstable. His watercolors have been shown in many galleries and exhibitions. Foster was known for his easy humor, and enjoyed antique cars, hiking, music, dogs and wearing bow ties and berets. He leaves behind his children Cynthia McFarland of Williamstown MA, Paul Nystrom of Powell OH, and Joyce Powell of Newry ME. Also his grandchildren Andrew Foster and Jeffrey Powell, Stephen and Alexis Nystrom, and great grandson James Foster Nystrom. The memorial service will be at Nickerson Funeral Home, Orleans, MA, November 14, 2015, 2pm. Donations: Perkins School for the Blind.
