HERRUP, David Aaron Of Cambridge, was born April 9, 1955, in Pittsburgh, PA and died on June 18, 2017, in Cambridge, MA.

After earning a B.S. degree from the University of Chicago, a Ph.D in Physics from Cornell University, and a postdoc at Berkeley, David worked for some years as a research physicist at Fermilab in Illinois, before taking up positions as a medical physicist in radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and as lecturer at Harvard Medical School.

David was a devoted traveler to Italy, a lover of European literature and of the perfect cup of coffee, and a superb cook. The most modest of men, David shone as a father. He left us appropriately on Father's Day.

He is survived by his wife, the historian Nicole Jordan, his beloved daughter, Rachel Ming Herrup, his mother Sara Herrup, and two brothers Paul and Mark (Theresa) Herrup.

A graveside service will take place at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA, on Friday, June 23, 2017, at 11:00 am. Rabbi Jim Morgan of Harvard Hillel will officiate. A reception will be held afterwards at Harvard Hillel on Mt Auburn St. In lieu of flowers, donations in David's memory may be made to the International Rescue Committee and the De Rham Hospice Home, 65 Chilton St. Cambridge, MA, 02138. David was a rare person in his intelligence, sensitivity and decency. He was also deeply private and loathed the kind of self-advertisement typical of our present society. David sa molte cose / David knows many things, one of his Italian friends once told me. He will be enormously missed in Cambridge and beyond.

David was a remarkable medical physicist at MGH. His math work was extraordinary and against the odds. He prolonged or saved the lives of many patients. He was also an exceedingly modest person for all of his gifts. May his memory be blessed. Our thoughts are with his family. It was a privilege to know him. E. H.
