I realize now, Marco was only 25 when as a 15 year old I loved his classes so much, I spent all my study periods there as well. We painted murals for Christmas on the 12 foot glass walls in the hall of the high school. We made murals on paper and covered the bleachers in the gym for proms. He sent me to free art classes on Saturdays at Mass College of Art. I used my love of murals at all the schools I worked in. 35 years of Special Ed. Art was a wonderful tool for teaching and sharing.. My favorite teacher.

My earliest art instruction came in High School in 1964. My art teacher, Marco Marchi, had a zeal for art that was absolutely contagious. He lived, and breathed art and was a master at most aspects of it.

Always experimenting, Marco encouraged his students to do the same and I was introduced to many different painting mediums and techniques. Watercolor, gouache, clay, collage, printmaking, pastel painting and even mural work were among the things that I was introduced to. High School was a place to try new things, to be exposed. I was astounded at Marco's knowledge and I viewed him as walking and talking encyclopedia of art and artists. I skipped out of many of my other classes to learn more about art from him.

Marco encouraged me to enter one of my pastel paintings of a bowl of onions in the nationwide Scholastic Art Competition for High School students and I was shocked when I won a gold key medal and first place blue ribbon for that entry out of all the high school students in the five State New England area. The Best of New England was the name of the student exhibition in Boston. Now that expression is the slogan of Gallery On The Green that has represented my work since 1989. See Art Galleries page. I was elected Class Artist" in High School and started to win many competitions that I entered.

I had to good fortune to continue my association and studies with Marco while a full time student at the Art Institute of Boston. Marco and his business partner, Steve Yankopolis, owned an art gallery in the Greater Boston area and hired me on weekends and during the summer breaks to work as a custom framer and sales associate. Steve was also an artist, sculptor and writer and I have to admit that I learned more about art from those two men than I did as a full time student at the Art Institute of Boston. Because of Marco's contagious love of life and art, I have been a full time professional artist since 1971 and am now a member of the International Guild Of Realism.

I will really miss our long cross-country telephone conversations that we enjoyed several times each year.

I am an artist today because I was influenced by Mr. Marchi, the only Art instructor I ever had or needed. In 1979 I was 15 years old and could draw and Mr. Marchi recognized talent as he saw it. He challenged me to paint. Paint? I made a wreck of a fine drawing...he smiled, sat down and told me "You will learn more in the next five minutes than ever in your life." And he was right! He swished texture, color, tone and depth and brought my drawing back to life, as a fine painting. He asked me, "you got it?"I did. The same method is what I still use today, for all the mediums I work with. We would also play guitars together, and make up hilarious songs. The only teacher I ever truly missed after graduation. A true Mountain of Talent! Thank you for your colorful gift, Mr. Marchi. Rest In Peace.

Forever your pupil,
Kevin A. Crowley (he called me "Creepy"!)

Mr. Marchi had an enormous influence on the person I have become today. He always encouraged me to express myself creatively and to always be true to who I am/was. The love I have for him is too great for words. I will forever be grateful for his many lessons in both class and life.
He was one of a kind.
He will always be in my heart.

Marco was a genuine creative force in so many of our lives. This good and insightful man had a monumental effect on my life; on how I perceive and engage the world. As his students, he instilled in us the idea that we remain ever curious and never stop learning. He impressed on me the discipline that we finish what we start. And all of this, always, with his sly, skewed sense of humor. I am grateful to have known him as a teacher and a friend.

I was fortunate to have known Marco through Cardiac Rehab at Lawrence Memorial hospital in Medford. He was so interesting to talk to ; I could listen to him for hours; he was fascinating with his knowledge of antiquities and it was my privilege to have visited his home and see some of them.
I also purchased some of his art work.
I remember when his grandson was born. He was overjoyed! It was an honour to have known him.
