Oct. 12, 1960 – Jan. 1, 2013

Helen Rose Evans died Jan. 1, 2013 of kidney failure and breast cancer. She was born Oct. 12, 1960 in Missoula, Mont. In 1964, the family moved to Bozeman where Helen attended Whittier Grade School, Willson Middle School and Bozeman Junior and Senior High, where she graduated in 1978. Helen then attended Montana State University, where she graduated in 1982 with a degree in accounting. Eventually, she became a CPA. In 1987, Helen married Will Evans in San Diego, and the family moved to Portland in 1990. Then in 1998, Garret Michael joined the family. He now attends Central Catholic High School.

Helen did not let health challenges get in the way of enjoying an active life. She walked the Portland Marathon; was active in outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing and skiing; and enjoyed bike touring in the U.S. and Europe. She cared deeply about helping others and volunteered with organizations such as SMART, the Oregon Food Bank, and Meals on Wheels.

Helen is survived by her husband, Will; son, Garret; parents, Milly and Joe Gutkoski of Bozeman; brother, Mike and his wife, Luda of Lagos, Nigeria; sister, Marie Clark and her husband, Brian of Kalispell, Mont.; and nephew, Kellin Clark of Washington, D.C.
