Barbara Bymside Obituary

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Barbara Pfohl Byrnside, 91, died on Nov. 6, 2014, at St. Joseph's of the Pines in Southern Pines, N.C.
Barbara, born on Jan. 30, 1923, was a native of Bradford, Pa., where she lived with her parents, Cornell N. Pfohl Jr. and Elizabeth Miller Pfohl.
She attended Derrick City School and Kingswood School; she graduated from Connecticut College for Women. The oldest of four children, she was predeceased by Janaan and Jerry. Cornell N. Pfohl III - Pete - continues to live in the family home in Bradford.
A war bride, Barbara began her 30 year career as a Navy wife when she married Lt. Benjamin C. Byrnside Jr. of Oak Hill, W.Va. They were married for 65 years until Ben died in September 2010. His assignments as a submariner took them to Panama and eight coastal states, including Hawaii, a total of 21 residences. They settled in Whispering Pines, N.C. for a golf-filled retirement of 27 years. Their last home was Belle Meade in Southern Pines.
Barbara was a wonderful wife and mother with active interests in golfing, gardening, bridge playing, and painting. She also enjoyed traveling and volunteer work with Gray Ladies and Moore County Arts Council. She was an avid reader who shared her love of literature, art, music, and crossword and jigsaw puzzles with her children, Barbara Lee Wachter and Benjamin Craig Byrnside and grandchildren, Charlotte Mulloy, Eleanor Palladin, Shannon Caleshu, Ian Byrnside and Brendan Byrnside. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
At her request, no service was held. Instead, a small group of family and friends met to celebrate her life with three of her favorite foods: popcorn, lobster and coconut cake.
Her ashes will be placed with her husband's in the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium, Annapolis, Maryland. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association - Eastern North Carolina, 3739 National Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh NC 27612, by phone 1-800-272-3900, or online: http://www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp.
