He was born and raised in Houston County, Texas. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served from 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1972, having earned, among other honors, the National Defense Service Medal and the USMC Expert Sharpshooter's Badge.

He worked a combined 36 years as a switchman and engineer for the Seaboard Coastline Railroad (CSX) and Georgia Central Railroad. He retired from railroading in 2008. However, his retirement was short-lived as he went to work for the city of Pembroke a few months later, retiring in 2015.
He was an active member of the Pembroke Christian Church. He was a member of Acacia Lodge #452, F&AM for 34 years and was an active member of the American Legion in Pembroke.
He and his devoted companion, Hazel Thigpen, traveled together and shared a devoted faith that sustained and strengthened the bond they shared. He was a good friend and loving father to his children and many others who needed him.
