George Young Obituary

George Russell Young

BUCYRUS: George R. Young, 88, formerly of Aurora St. in Bucyrus died Monday, December 10, 2012 at his son's home in Milford, Indiana where he was living and being cared for.

George was born July 9, 1924 in Holmes Twp., to the late George E. and Viola M. (Campbell) Young. He grew up attending Whetstone School and graduated from Bucyrus High School with the Class of 1943. That same year, George was drafted into the US Navy and served in the Armored Guard to protect merchant ships. Upon his return from the service in 1946, George began working at Shunk Mfg. and was with the company until he retired in 1987. On July 19, 1953, he married Dorothy P. Walter who preceded him in death on January 19, 1987.

George was an individual who could get worked up if provoked but if you didn't bother him, he wouldn't bother you. He believed in working hard to provide for his family but he also enjoyed sleeping in if the opportunity arose. From a very young age until just recently, George loved building model boats and planes. He liked to hunt and fish and though he was not a certified mechanic, he was very good when it came to working on cars. George followed OSU football and basketball and he liked going on road trips to visit family. Most recently, George found pleasure in eating his morning oatmeal and relaxing to westerns in the comfort of his easy chair but whatever George did, Ruffus, the family dog was there.

He is survived by two children, Alan R. Young, Sr. of Milford, Indiana and Patty (Ron) Rothhaar of Oceola; step-daughter, Shirley Ann Groves; six grandchildren, Cherie K. Stewart, Alan R. Young, Jr., Joseph L. Young, Daniel Young, Sarah (Young) Martin, Andrew Young; four step grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; one brother, Harvey E. (Glenna) Young of Bucyrus and one sister, Carrie (Ron) Anderson as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, George is preceded in death by two sons, George and Robert Young; a great grandson and a great-great granddaughter; one brother, Clifford J. Young; three sisters, Velma L. Young, Hazel H. Brady and Edith Greissing and a longtime companion, Cora Masters.

His family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, December 13 at Wise Funeral Service where his funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow in the Texas Twp. Cemetery in Benton where full military rites will be provided by both the US Navy and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Humane Society serving Crawford County through the funeral home. Online expressions of sympathy may be left at www.wisefuneral.com.
