Howard E. Gwirtz Jr.

Bucyrus - Howard E Gwirtz Jr., 85 passed away on April 18, 2021. Howard was born to Howard F. Gwirtz Sr. and Martha (Durnwald) Gwirtz February 28, 1936 in Shelby, Ohio. Howard lived his entire life in the North Central Ohio area. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joyce (Easley) Gwirtz. Howard retired in 1999 from PPG Industries where he had worked more than 40 years.

Howard was a veteran with the 82nd Airborne and served his country with pride. He enjoyed being active in the 82nd Airborne chapter meetings, serving as the secretary for his Ohio chapter until 2012. He also enjoyed tinkering with farm equipment and small motors, was an accomplished carpenter, and a jack of all trades. He enjoyed attending auctions and collecting old farm equipment. He also enjoyed tending his vegetable garden, and raising small livestock including milk goats, rabbits, and fowl of all kinds. He loved spending time fishing on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He extensively traveled the country, and his favorite place was the North Woods on the U.P., where he established a vacation home that he enjoyed for many years.

He is survived by 2 brothers and a sister, James (Eileen) Gwirtz of Crestline, David (Sally) Gwirtz of Crestline and Virginia (Robert) Pelfrey of Mansfield. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Carol (Dr. Linn) Carrothers of Riverside CA, and a brother-in-law, Richard Easley of Lancaster CA. He is survived by 7 children, Dr. Jeffery (Diane) Gwirtz of Manhattan KS, Cathy Phegley of Mansfield, Charles Gwirtz of Crestline, Jackie (David) Evans of Bucyrus, Kelleah (Steve) Metzger of Shelby, Elizabeth Quaintance of Marion, and Edward (Peggy) Gwirtz of Shelby. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

The family will have a private funeral service and request that in lieu of flowers, remembrances for Howard can be made to Gideon's Bibles. The Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Moments of remembrance may be left online at
