James Mahoney Obituary

James Patrick Mahoney, Jr.

Age: 70 • Gainesville, FL

It is with sorrow that we announce that James Patrick "JP" Mahoney, Jr. died on February 10, 2017 from a fall and a stroke at home in Gainesville, Florida.

JP was the second of seven sons born to Dr. James P. and Rosemary (Ro) McNeive Mahoney on Nov. 13, 1946 in Burlington, Vt. He grew up in Burlington and as a youth enjoyed reading, drawing and running as well as the many and varied games in our back yard on Brookes Ave. He continued reading all his life and often read several books at a time. He attended Rice High School and graduated from Hayden High School in Topeka, Kansas in 1965. JP ran cross country and track in high school and completed the Champlain Valley Marathon in NY in 1976 in 3 hours 13 minutes of which he was quite proud. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Corp and served in combat in the Viet Nam War in 1966. JP also served six years in the US Navy and was stationed at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba and aboard the aircraft carrier USS America. In the spring of 1988 he attended the 100th birthday of his grandmother Katie McNeive in Topeka, Kansas with his future wife, Brenda Bartlett as they moved west to Albuquerque, NM. He and Brenda were married on Nov. 12, 1988. Brenda picked that date because it would be easy for JP to remember the date as it was the day before his birthday. He worked for several years at Presbyterian Health Services in Albuquerque until he and Brenda returned to Vermont in 1988. JP retired while they lived in Shoreham, Winooski and finally in Brenda's home town of Newport. In the fall of 2016 they moved to Gainesville, Florida to enjoy a warm fall and winter.

JP is survived by his wife Brenda and his six brothers and their families: Michael and wife Eileen Andreoli of Winooski, Brennan and wife Karen of Midlothian, Va. Sean and his partner Sara Bridgman of Charlotte, Paddy and wife Polly of Woodstock, Mahon of Isle La Motte and Eamon and wife Jean of Burlington. He is also survived by his nephews, nieces and many cousins and lifelong friends who will miss him. JP always had family and Vermont in his heart. Brenda said that one of his lasts requests was for some Pete's Ice Cream of old Burlington.

A celebration of JP's life will take place in the spring. As a kindness to his memory a prayer for him and donation to your favorite charity would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry to hear of JP's passing. JP was one of the most unforgettable guys I spent time with in my life, and I'm thankful that our paths crossed many years ago.
JP had a personality that will be impossible to match. He was a one in a million person who I had such an easy time relating to. I think it was an "Irish thing"..we both had each other figured out..
Thanks for being my friend back in the day, JP. You gave life a great run. RIP old friend. Save me a seat up there !
