LAWRENCE KILLICK Obituary

LAWRENCE KILLICK - ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Lawrence Findley Killick was born in Burlington, Vt., on May 31, 1922, and departed this earth on Jan. 31, 2013, at the age of 90. Larry attended the University of Vermont and Dartmouth, playing basketball for both schools. He was in the UVM Basketball Hall of Fame and the New England Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, and was one of Sports Illustrated's "50 Greatest Sports Figures of the Century" from the state of Vermont. After playing college ball, he played professional basketball for the Baltimore Bullets. A patriotic American, he was a captain in the Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific Theater during W.W.II, as well as the Korean War. Larry married Rhoda Hershoff in 1960, and they moved their family from New York City to Brevard County in 1962. He worked with Carroll Distributing and soon became an active member of the business community, serving on several boards of directors. One of his personal successes was having his memoirs published. His book, "Boots, Hoops and Troops," recounted his time in the Marines, basketball and the war. Larry Killick was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rhoda; daughter, Debbie; sons, Alan (Holly), Tom (Kellie), and Barrett (Heather); and six grandchildren, Leighton, Ariel, Aiden, Joelle, Brody and Kyson. A celebration of his life will be held at the Holiday Inn Melbourne-Viera Conference Center, 8298 N. Wickham Road, on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 2 p.m. Arrangements by Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, Rockledge, 321-632-1350. Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

My parents were best friends with Larry (Mr. Killick) and Rhoda (Mrs. Killick). There were few in life that were as personable as Mr. Killick. He was one of the most charismatic and personable guys one could know. I spent some good times listening to Larry's stories, basketball times at Dartmouth and shooting baskets in their pool hoop as a kid while on summer vacation at their home in Cocoa Beach. My father (Arnold Belasco), recently passed (December 21, 2016) but my dad told stories of Larry from the first time he met him as well as Rhoda and looked at them as best of friends. Unfortunately, as we all aged, geography and extended family separated us from the Killicks as we grew older, but god knows, we had some great times and now memories of the Killicks and it made my childhood that much better knowing them and always hearing those stories of Lawrence Killick. My fathers memorial is May 20th this year and we will remember how much my dad loved being with Mr. Killick. Spinner

I was very sorry to read of Larrys passing. My dad Paul and Larry were friends from growing up in Burlington. After my Dads passing in 2008 I read Larrys wonderful book.In his book he made mention of my Dad with a picture of Dad and Larry taken in the South Pacific.I felt compelled to try to contact Larry after reading the book and was very glad that I did.It was great to hear the same stories Dad told of his time with Larry during the war from Larry as well. The long conversations I had with Larry about various topics were a true testomony to his great sincerity and love of life.

The killicks lived across the street on Green Street. Larry always included my brother and I whenever he and his friends went swimming at the beach. He was such a great basketball player. He is the one that gave me a passion for the sport. Larry was selected to play on the East squad for College All Star east- west game that was played in Madison Square Garden in NYC.I remember when he spearheaded UVM to beat Manhatten before a packed house at the Memorial Auditorium.I'll miss his Christmas cards.

Larry became a very good friend and frequent lunch partner. His sincere personality and his personal accomplishments demanded admiration and respect.

Our friendship was much too long in the making. I will miss his constant quips and stories.

Larry's sincerity will be a cherished memory.

My sincere condolences to all the Killick family. I am so grateful for the honor of sharing a swimming lane with Larry for several years at the M.I. Healthplex. Often I would sing his favorite "old-time" songs as I treaded water to his great delight and appreciation. He continuously complimented me to the point that I almost gave Broadway a shot. Then reality returned when he left. Be rest assured he will have a special place in heaven reserved for only the very special souls who touch the hearts of all who ever met him.

My special Vt friend, Your eyes smiled as you noticed that UVM t-shirt in the gym. We had many nice conversations about Vt and your career. I did enjoy your book and happy you signed it, a special treasure to know you. This is another adventure for you and you are making everyone laugh around you. Will miss your smile and friendship. Thank you for the memories.
