WALTER CHIZINSKY - SOUTH BURLINGTON - Walter Chizinsky died peacefully at home, in South Burlington, on Oct. 1, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, three children, and four grandchildren. Walter was born in 1926 and grew up in Springfield, Mass., where he attended Classical High School. After serving in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps (1944-1946), he earned a B.S. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1949); an M.S. at the University of Chicago (1950); and a Ph.D. at New York University (1960). Walter's career included teaching and administrative posts at Bennett College, Briarcliff College, Stephens College, and Bergen Community College. He retired from academic life in 1992. In 2005, Walter and his wife moved to Vermont to be closer to their grandchildren, Zoe and Eliza-Eve Leas; their daughter, Sandy Chizinsky; and her husband, Bill Miller. Walter's family is profoundly grateful for the deeply compassionate care he received through the hospice program of the Visiting Nurse Association, and wishes to extend particular thanks to Melinda Johnson, Penny Norful, Denise McLaughlin, and Melanie Pomerantz. Finally, Walter's family wishes to thank Dr. Marvin Klikunas and the staff of Given Health Care for their care and support.

I worked with Walter at Bergen Community College and always found him to be very courteous, intelligent, humane and supportive whenever our paths crossed. He had a sense of humor that kept many of us laughing in some stressful times (e.g. long hours during registration). He made the world better by being in it! Marta and family. I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Dr C. He was an amazing person that I use to enjoy speaking to a lot. Briarcliff times were great times. We all enjoyed that small college so much. I was sorry that our reunion we had in 2003 that you both were unable to attend. You both were missed greatly and lots of people asked about you both.It was great to see so many people there all together once again.
Dr.C. was a wonderful caring and excellent teacher too as well as a special person. We all are better to of had him in our lives, especially in our youth where his teaching made such a difference to us all.
Thinking of you all at this time.

I was one of Dr. Chizinsky's students at Briarcliff. He profoundly affected my life by giving me an interest in biology - which I had managed to avoid and swore I would never take again after a horrible class in high school. He opened my eyes to how amazing biology is and gave me a book by his grad school friend Eugenie Clark. It was that book that made me decide to be a marine biologist - which I have been since 1974. I love my life and if it weren't for him I would never have gone down this path. I have often tried to find out where he was. At least I found this on Facebook - Briarcliff. My best wishes to you his family. He was a wonderful man and he will be missed. He certainly blessed my life.
