HAROLD GEORGE HERSEY - VENICE, Fla. - Harold George Hersey, 85, of Venice, Fla., passed away on Jan. 21, 2014, with his wife and family at his side. Beloved husband of Gloria Cecile (Hunter) Hersey for 65 years, Harold was a devoted father of three surviving sons, Ronald Lew Hersey and his wife, Penny, of Mashpee, Mass., Michael Leonard Hersey of Thomaston, Maine, and Warner Allen Hersey and his wife, Christine, of Longmont, Colo. He is survived by his seven grandchildren, Stephanie Blackburn, Lynnette DiFloures, Michael Hersey, Jonathan Hersey, Jennifer Hersey, Lindsey Hersey and Jordan Hersey; and eight greatgrandchildren. Harold leaves his cousins, Betty Viola Sweet (Chase) and Frank "Sonny" Tobin Jr. Born in Montpelier on April 14, 1928, Harold was the only son of Lew Randall Waldo Hersey and Mary Rose Anzalone (Converse). During his childhood years, he was raised in the Hardwick and Calais area and attended high school in Plainfield. After high school, he worked a number of years as an auto mechanic for Perry Automotive and was a salesman at Montgomery Wards in Barre. Later, he and his wife became owner/operators of Hersey Garage in Plainfield, and then Hersey Fuel Oil in Plainfield and Barre. He worked as a volunteer fireman, was a member and chairman of the Twinfield School Board, a lifetime member of the Elks Club, and a member of the NE Fuel Institute. Later in life, he moved to Venice, Fla., with his wife to be near her brother, Leighton Hunter, and his wife, Susan. The family will always be grateful for the loving care provided by Kate and Victoria from Tidewell Hospice in Venice, Fla., and the staff at Bay Breeze Nursing Home for his care during his declining health. Harold was a devoted husband and father. He was happiest when surrounded by his family. He was best known as a mechanic and salesman and built many successful businesses. He was a loving and caring person and will be missed by all his family and friends. A graveside memorial service will be scheduled in Plainfield later this summer, 2014.
