Called 'Bucky' since childhood, he was born in Burlington on November 16, 1924, the eldest of the four sons of Louis and Bessie (Brown) Hershberg. The family lived on Elmwood Avenue until 1938, when they moved to North Prospect Street.

Throughout his teen years, Bucky often worked alongside his father at L. Hershberg Fruit and Produce. When the war ended Bucky returned to the family business, where he remained for nearly all his working life. In 1950 he married Donna Unrot, whom he'd met while visiting an uncle in Detroit. Bucky and Donna had two daughters, Helene McGee and Amy Tatro. While the family lived in Burlington they were members of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue.

Several years after Donna's death Bucky moved to Florida. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Leonard and Edwin. He is survived by his brother David; daughters Helene McGee and her husband Dan, and Amy and her husband Dennis Tatro; grandchildren Ryan Simpson and his wife Vanessa, Donna Simpson and her husband Michael Wagner, and Brianna Smith and her husband Stephen; as well as five great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Libby Hershberg of California and Judy Hershberg of Burlington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
