Bernard J. Couillard Sr. of Burlington VT, age 93, passed on to Heaven Thursday July 27, 2017 with his loving family and caregivers at his side.

Bernard was born in Burlington VT on November 11, 1923 to Noelina and John Couillard. Predeceased by his wife of 60 years Catherine L. Ploof, 3 brothers, Raymond, Clement and Roland, and 1 sister Jean. He is survived by his 3 children Bernard Jr. and wife Judith of Underhill, VT, Daniel and wife Kathryn of Colchester, VT and Dorothy and husband Paul Curiano of Bayville, NY. Also 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Bernard began working to sustain his parents and siblings at a young age at Colodny's Public Market in Burlington and the Woolen Cotton Mill in Winooski. He quickly became a prolific business owner of Bernie's Taxi, in which he took his future wife Catherine on their first date, Bernie's Gas Station, Bernie's Snack Bar, Bernie's Grocery Store, Couillard Apartments and Bernie's Auto Sales which operated with the help of his two sons for almost 50 years.

The family is extremely grateful for the loving attention and care he received from Hospice and the staff at the Mansfield Place in Essex Jct. VT, his home away from home for the past 23 months.

Bernard's family and friends salute to his work ethic, stubborn strength and endurance that served him well in life. Prayers for his Heavenly life forever after.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 11:00am at St. Mark's Church in Burlington. Private interment to follow at Resurrection Park Cemetery in S. Burlington. In lieu of flowers please, memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Chittenden & Grand Isle Counties at 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446.

So sorry to hear of his passing. I new him while we were at Mansfield.i liked kidding him about his blowing pass me on our way to Florida on three occasions. We also joked about my uncle Walt Labounty and Bernie being auto traders. I can't be at the funeral because I am recovering from a stroke. He will be in my prayers.

Bernie Jr., Sorry for your loss. Your dad was a nice man; pleasant and jovial to all who stopped by his shops. My dad also liked cars and enjoyed stopping by Bernie's Auto to look at cars and has bought a few from him in years past. He will be missed by many.
