Conchita E. Dodge Obituary
Conchita E. Dodge

Essex Jct - Conchita Evarista (Gomez) Dodge, 76, of Essex peacefully passed from this life at UVMMC on January 26, 2018 due to complications from a chronic illness.

Chita was born on June 24, 1941 in Montpelier, VT, the daughter of Facundo and Eloisa (Teja) Gomez. She was a graduate of Montpelier High School, Class of 1959, and went on to receive an Associate's degree from Champlain College and a Bachelor's degree from Trinity College of Vermont. In 1962, she married Richard Dodge. His U.S. Navy service took them to Chicago and Newport, RI, before they moved back to Vermont in 1965, settling in Essex Jct in 1971. Chita began her finance career with IBM in 1965, with a brief interlude as a paralegal between the births of her sons, Doug and Ricardo. Chita and Richard divorced in 1975. In 1977 she returned to IBM, where she worked the rest of a 31 year career until retiring in 2003.

Music was always a big part of Chita's life, from her lifelong love of the violin, to her attendance at the famous Newport Folk Festival where Bob Dylan plugged in for the first time. She spent many years singing with the Champlain Echoes chorus and would often practice her vocal talents cajoling her boys to wake up in the morning or finish their chores. She even embraced her sons' love of the music of Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead and treasured many personalized mix tapes and cd's of their music. When not filled with music, her home was often filled with kids, as her house and yard became a frequent gathering place for many neighborhood children. Chita was often known to discover kids hiding in her trees or bushes, even when her sons were away. Regardless of any bluster at the time, her fondness for these children remained throughout her days. Two of these kids, Rob Uttecht and Eric Dufresne, were like sons to her from the time they came into her life as kindergarteners until her passing.

Chita is survived by her sons, Douglas and wife, Heather, and Ricardo, all of Essex Jct; her brother F. Vincent Gomez and wife, Nancy, of Monkton, VT; brother Pablo Gomez and wife, Carol, of Reno, NV; and sister Pilar McCarthy and husband, Robert, of Colchester, VT; as well as beloved aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews from Vermont, to Spain, to Australia, and to South America. She was predeceased by her parents Eloisa, in 1974, and Facundo, in 1978.

The family would like to thank the many wonderful caregivers at Starr Farm, Mansfield Place, Burlington Health and Rehab, and, in particular, the nurses, doctors, and staff of UVMMC, all of whom helped Chita negotiate the ups and downs of her illness in the final years of her life.

Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 on Friday, February 2, 2018, at the Ready Funeral Home and Cremation Services Mountain View Chapel at 68 Pinecrest Drive in Essex Jct, with a private interment for the family to follow on Saturday at the family plot in Montpelier.
